any free virus soft will do i guess, i use avira antivir. (xp) when i download or decompress something bad it makes a brief beep and asks me what i want to do with it, keep it (its blocked then), move to quarantine or delete.

I have never used virus protection. As long as you're smart with what you download, you'll never need one.

Worms and viruses hardly exist anymore. That's because ISPs are now fighting for customers' business and have built-in strong safeguards to protect them.
Malware is still a problem, but as Brisk says, with experience regarding what to view and what not the risk is minimal. You don't really need anti-virus software.

i recently reinstalled my system and as soon as i had most progs reinstalled i thought about reinstalling antivir again, but didnt. i downed a cracked acdsee then. bad move... it blocked my internet so i couldnt down antivir and had to reinstall the backup i luckily just made before.
DO use/activate antivir when you down nasty stuff! you can deactivate it when youre a nice person though...

i used to use bitdefender, that has this little box in the corner, you just drop any file or thing into it and it tells you if it's OK.
