New IDM - is there anything out there at all?

I recently found myself listening to AFX - Hangable Auto
Bulb, remenessing the old days, where I got it some dusty
vinyl-rip of HAB through napster, in god knows what rpm.
That was a real eyeopener for me back then, because the
melodies, speed and composition of these tracks, really
spoke to me as being the best case of IDM there is.
Although musicians like Chris Clark, Astrobotnia,
Squarepusher and Venetian Snares touched me with their
music, none of the above ever reached the same analogue,
witty, speedy feeling as HAB has for me. I don't know -
maybe i've missed out on something, but just take a track
like "Laughable Butane Bob" - it is so fluid and it almost
lives in a universe of its own.
Now let's pretend I was stuck in 1995 for a moment, and you
were about to tell me about what albums, similar to HAB's
consistency, that have been released until 2008 - what
albums and artists would you suggest me?

Time is unfortunately always of the essence, so going
through the whole back-catalogue, could be somewhat time
consuming ;) . Artists/album you'd recommend?

Plug, huh? Plug did a remix on NIN - The Perfect Drug, that
I really love. I'll note that..

get the 4 Merck mixes, they'll give you an idea of who to
seek out. The 4th mix by Proswell playing only his stuff but
still very good.

Nothing comes close to AFX and aint dat the truth.

Plug - Drum'n'bass for Papa is an awesome album, although at
the end of the day its just jungle/d'n'b done really really
well; its not in a 'universe of its own' like some Aphex
tracks.

I take it you have all Squarepusher's albums: Big Loada,
Hard Normal Daddy and Bubble & Squeak EP's being the closest
to Hangable Auto Bulb.

Some Bogdan Raczynski is in a similar vein as well. There
isn't much to choose between his albums but I'd recommend
'Thinking of You' and 'Samurai Math Beats'.

On Squarepusher, nothing beats "Feed Me Weird Things" for
me, and "Samurai Math Beats" by Bogdan is also one of my
favs.
I might have to check out more Bogdan...

Yeah, the first Squarepusher album I heard was Go Plastic
about the time it was released and at that point I'd barely
listened to much d'n'b/jungle so gradually discovering his
back catalogue was a reverse process for me.
I guess with that kind of music it depends when you first
hear it and when your mind first gets blown thus altering
your pre-conceptions for whatever you hear afterwards.

Definitely check out more Bogdan; you really can't go wrong
with any of his albums; the formula is pretty much the same,
except for 'MyloveIlove' which is an ambient album.

Returning to your original request for analogue, witty
speedy music, I trust you have all of AFX's stuff up to the
present day. The entire Analord series is absolute genius,
as is everything by The Tuss.

Various people on this message board seem to complain no end
that Aphex doesn't release good music any more, and that is
simply not true. Loads of tracks amongst the Analord series
are in a 'universe of their own'. The synths on Fenix Funk
get me everytime, they have a completely unmistakable sound
and feel. I just don't think there are very many people
capable of making music that just runs and flows so
naturally. There never was a better example of brain-dance
(in the literal sense of the term)

almost dead.

Aphex, Autechre and the like will always be the best, but I
think its true that there is plenty of very decent and
innovative music out there, judging by a couple of the
recommendations in this thread (Wisp) and by several made by
various people in a thread that Woofer Attack made the other
day, which I can't be arsed to find and link right now.

Personally, I stopped exploring new electronica/IDM a few
years ago, having only returned to it recently, and started
getting into techno/minimal techno/acid, etc.
Time spent listening to the 'classics' (Aphex, Ae, Boards,
Squarepusher, etc) as opposed to new music easily occupies
the majority of my time-spent-listening-to-music.

i dunno...i think aleksi perala's project v is one of the
best electronic music releases this decade. i went through a
little period lately where it was the only cd i had on me.
it's such a fucking great album start to finish. i never get
sick of it. i think it deserves way more praise. praise on,
motherfuckaz.

Proem has done a lot of amazing stuff, I like 'place gun to
head' the most personally.
Some years ago I would sit up all night listening to that
song.

He has a very well produced sound, but I find his two latest
albums aren't as good in content.. Although they are still
cool..

As far as IDM goes, I like quaristice, but I haven't really
heard anything mindbending in terms of sound and ideas in
this genre for a few years.. There are however a lot of good
ambient and electronic releases, like Fennesz - Black Sea,
Bola - Kroungrine (6/10), Burial - Untrue, Elegi Sistereis
(haunting ambience, with some idm trickery in places,
although much less digital), Tim Hecker - Atlas and
Norberg..

These are some of the electronic highlights for me the past
year..

the new wisp is amazing
up there with aphex and squarepusher but still individual,
(often) v.fast, mental, melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, full,
electronic music.
knocks spots of everything else current/at the moment.for a
while imho
