Between this and the new Tim Hecker coming up, it's going to
be a fine fine winter.

Yeah actually, these guys both make good winter listening.
Rich and indulgent like fruit tarts and liqueurs.

Heh. I downloaded the album on friday, but "saved" it for
the hangover today. I've listened to it twice, and it's a
wonderful album.

In some circles (academic / music critic geek?), they say
Fennesz's "Live in Japan" is the greatest live laptop
performance ever.

Not in a "Hey I use Abelton Live and check out my
pre-recorded beats inside Buffer Override"
sense, but in
a "the computer is a viable instrument" kind of way

I played this a couple of times already, it's good but not
sure what all the fuss is about with Fennesz.

Listen to Endless Summer or that live in Japan gl0th
mentioned.

This new one, I dunno. I like the sounds. Compositions are
too maudlin for my taste. This will work better live maybe.
He's awesome live.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2008-11-24 09:05 [#02254666]
Points: 1767 Status: Lurker

I did listen to Endless Summer, it's better than the new one
- but hardly "amazing". Fennesz gets too much praise, he's
just an average artist made to look good by a welter of shit
electronic artists who are only making music because it's
cheap and easy.

I must agree with Barcode. I like Fennesz, but he's really
not that different from all the other guys in the
noise/ambient/experimental/glitch scene. He's made up to be
some kind of a missing link between laptop music and high
art, which he simply isn't.
The praise Endless Summer receives is just ridiculous.

If anybody wants some more reference, I've got all his stuff
on slsk.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2008-11-24 11:15 [#02254702]
Points: 18042 Status: Lurker

There are few releases in the ambient experimental vein that
are as good as Endless Summer. The ridiculously
under-appreciated World Receiver by Tetsu Inoue comes to
mind, Mirages by Tim Hecker, maybe Geir Jenssen's Cho Oyu
(Tibetan field recordings) (but I don't like his usual stuff
as Biosphere so much)

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2008-11-24 11:28 [#02254703]

ask yourself, whats so difficult about getting a bunch of
samples, then some fuzzy synth noises, and layering 6 or 7
over eachother 0 adding a stack of reverb. any cunt can do
it.

sometimes fennesz pulls off something decent, but for the
most part it's boring, tuneless, linear,, unlistenable
garbage. and people are too easily fooled by it.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2008-11-24 11:51 [#02254707]

Maybe you prefer to watch Tom Jenkinson walking on his hands
with sparklers jammed in his ass while he juggles live
piglets with his feet.

HAHA, what Jenkinson does to the minds of the weak with his
bass is indeed much much worse.
Now, I said that I agreed not knowing the extent of
Barcode's despise toward Fennesz. I withdraw my endorsment.

Can someone get a bunch of samples, then some fuzzy synth
noises, and layer 6 or 7 over eachother, adding a stack of
reverb, and then upload that here?

I love that shit.

This album is brilliant. I've always liked Fennesz but been
unable to really listen to his music. Those massive gurgling
bursts of deformed plucks are heavier than death metal.

This isn't just granular synthesized guitar, there is much
more there now. Coherent composition and alien textures. The
desolate, decaying landscape in the last track blows my mind
and Glide is better than Alva Noto's entire Xerrox vol.1
which it is similar to.

It might be the best fuzzy drone album ever.

you people freak about this and yet refuse to have a hafler
trio listen?

Barcode, you either get it or you don't.
And by Getting it, I mean getting something FROM it.

It's the same with all these artists that don't make
instantly recognizable music.
Anyone from Autechre to Alva Noto...

It's hard to explain exactly why one enjoys tracks, but for
me, this album just sounds amazing and has deep moods.
i don't take into account how difficult it is to make it, or
how he made it, I just listen to the sounds.
I've begun to really appreciate that "white noise/static"
type sound ever since I heard Xerrox, and Fennesz pulls it
off awesomely on this album.

Either way mate, nobody will like everything, but at least
give it a chance without all this prejudice and all these
'prethoughts'

I didn't like endless summer as much either.

imo. it's all experimental ambient/noise, but not the same
school to my ears.
