just curious - if i use some flicks from youtube in a visual project that will be shown to several people at a festival - do i need any permission for doing so?
the thing is that for some time now i have this exciting idea of using different clips from youtube and make a great mashup where the video and audio would correspond to each other. and i would want to make that on youtube videos.
any help appreciated.

Technically, yes. Copyright belongs to the original artist/owner, so if you were using them in a commercial sense (ie, you intend to make money for them OR use it to promote a message/idea) then you would need permission.
Do you stand to profit from the video in any way? If so, then yes you do need copyright permission. On the other hand, if it's just videos to be shown alongside music at a festival where half of them are drunk and most of them don't really care where they came from in the first place, go for it.
