Another week, another gaming topic by me, it's time of year. I went to get Little Big Planet but they couldn't sell me it, I wanted to cry but I didn't want to make a scene so I bought this to make myself feel better. I heard it was like S.T.A.L.K.E.R Safari Edition, and it is, and I like it a lot more than Far Cry 1. And no Trigens this time. The humans still seem to have ridiculously keen senses when I'm in the woods, but I hope the camouflage I've been saving up for will help.
I mean, it's super repetitive and all, but the huge amount of gun porn upgrades is the proverbial carrot on a stick keeping me going even after I've burnt down my 50th enemy encampment. The combat in this game is just hilarious. It's so fun mowing people down in trucks and burning everything down. Lot more fun than the first game.

It's not as good as Crysis, but it's a different thing. It's closer to Stalker and... Oblivion? in structure, seems to be a HUGE amount of ground to cover and umpteen things to collect and clear. Obviously you're not a superhuman, so this has a bit more of a ''survival'' feeling. Constantly being chased on the roads and chased through the woods and chased by mobs and shit, really have to pick your spots. You really have to be careful when you're staking out a base and sneaking around trying not to be detected, no cloak here, but man is it satisfying when you get 'er done, especially in the dead of night. The sense of place is well done, Africa baybee.
The ''buddy'' system is interesting... you've got a few guys that can help you and give you alternate missions that directly affect the gameplay in the story missions, and can come to your rescue if you lose all your health, but they can die for good if you fail to come to THEIR rescue when you call them. My ''best buddy'' is already dead. It was sad. He died in my arms as a result of my greed and tardiness.
I'm not sure how badly that fucked up my save, buy I kept going. I'm not letting my other buddy down, no way. Bros 4 life.

woah, awesome. My interest in the game jumped about about 30 notches as a result of that buddy system thing. I'm a huge supporter of games that can be drastically affected by the permanent death of a main character. I think I'll have to try this badboy out. It'll be the last game I can buy for a while (bought dead space too), but I don't have 360 or PS3, and my friend is buying Fallout 3 for PC so I'll get to try that out eventually.
Are you playing Farcry on PC then? I'm not sure what systems it's on, but IIRC crysis was PC only which would mean that you've had access to one at some point. If you are on PC, can you tell me how farcry2 runs in comparison to Crysis? Playing crysis at medium or even med/high settings looked too last gen, so I forced myself to play it on high/very high while barely pushing 25fps.

Also I remember reading about the wind/fire system in Farcry2 when it was still about a year from release. How has this system panned out? Is the wind/fire interaction convincingly simulated? Is burning vegetation down a genuinely useful tactic or just an interesting gimmick?

PS3, my PC can barely run Stalker on low at a playable framerate, let alone this, it's a pretty impressive looking game. And I hear it's very well optimized for PC, you don't need a big rig.
The fire isn't exactly an integral gameplay mechanic, but it's a fun dynamic. Little brushfires caused by your molotov cocktails or whatever quickly spread into big blazes that can engulf a camp, sometimes surprisingly fast. This makes all the enemies freak out and run away. This can be useful if they don't know you're there, a distraction that gives you some valuable sneaking time or a chance to strut in and steal their stuff. And it's useful in the middle of a battle when things aren't going your way... just light a fire, and the shit hits the fan. Ammo stashes start popping and sending bullets everywhere, propane tanks ignite and fly around, gas tanks explode, etc. Hopefully to your benefit.
Just a cute little wrinkle to keep the combat interesting, really.

Why can't "someone" make a game that combines the combat elements from RE4 and/-or MGS4, have enormous mechas a la Xenogears, the psychological mess from MGS2 and Neon Genesis Evangelion, a dynamic environmental system (with wind, rain, a scorching sun, deserts, forests, seas, valleys, and what have you), the atmosphere from ICO and/-or Shadow of the Colossus... and that's about all I can come up with for the moment.
And it would be an RPG, and you could die as easily as you would in the beginning of the game, as in the end. It would depend on skills. And it would rock!
It really shouldn't be to big a problem. Think about it.

There are some real nice ideas in this game. The buddy system for one. I just had one of those fantastic moments. I got shot and some chick picked me up to help me and helps me regain my consciousness. It was a hard battle so she gets shot and I pick off the rest of the mobs and save her in my arms with some medicine. What really makes this feel fantastic is the smooth first-person view the game never abandons.
But overall it's repetitive as hell and way to constraining for a game like this. You get a huge and chaotic world to explore but the types of missions are very limited. The environment is also non-stop hostile. At almost every crossroad you have to kill the complete camp because they'll follow you anyway. Or you can sneak past them but then you'd have to find another vehicle...
So yeah basically I'm also playing this to get my hands on some better weapons and hope it'll get a bit better. A game with these ambitions will always struggle with itself.

Yes, there's pretty much just the handful of mission types, and they always just boil down to killing someone or blowing up some McGuffin, no matter what it takes. There's no ''escort this guy to that place'' missions, no ''protect the fort'' missions, no ''stand on a mountain and snipe the guys that are attacking your friend'' mission, no ''sneak into the base and plant bombs'' mission, no ''capture this guy alive using stealth'' missions, no ''wear this uniform and infiltrate their base'' misssions... I could go on, and I often do.
I guess those missions would go against the philosophy of the game, by forcing you to approach the mission that one specific way, but it does result in the game feeling almost Assassin's Creed-like (which was also developed by Ubi Montreal...).
Like I said, it's repetitive, but fun for what it is and there's always the incentive of the new toys making me want to continue so I can experiment with them. I'm really hoping that when I get the camouflage, it gives me a HUGE stealth boost and I can use my silenced MP5 to be some bitchin' nightstalker.
And I'm still trying to figure out how to best get by the roadblocks without getting myself in TOO much hot water... it can be fucking maddening when they come after you in their trucks and destroy your ride in the MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING WOODS.

Well, I saved and quit for the night after purchasing the camo suit. Before I did that, however, I read in the upgrades log that the camo suit reduces your chance of being detected if you are in tall grass, are crouched, and are stationary. Basically, it seems as though it's strictly a ghillie suit type thing. Good for hiding snipers, not for being cloaked while moving. Will find out tomorrow if the camo was worth the price of admission.

I find it pretty useful... I use the camo suit, the silenced MP5 and the dart rifle. The dart rifle actually takes up your special weapon slot, not your rifle slot, so you can carry both an assault rifle for close combat and the dart rifle for sniping. The dart rifle doesn't have huge range, but it's enough for me to keep a comfortable distance while still being hard to spot in the foliage, and if someone creeps up on me, I can always pull out the MP5 in a jiffy.
How are you finding the game? I'm definitely liking it more now that stealth is a more viable option for me, though I haven't played much in the last few days... I got Little Big Planet and it is a revelation.

It's REALLY fun stalking through camps with the dart rifle. Doesn't have much ammo (maybe I can upgrade it?) but by the time you're used up all your darts, their ranks will be so thinned out that taking out the stragglers is easy. You're invisible with the camo and silent with the dart gun.

Interesting. I hadn't really given much thought to the Dart Rifle. For some reason I sort of assumed that it was going to be a tranquilizer dart, but I don't know why I would have thought such a thing in a game that is basically purely about killing people.
Well, farcry 2 is easily one of the most immersive (which apparently isn't a real word) games I've ever played. Although it doesn't have quite as many neat little physics tricks as Crysis, I actually find the graphics to look better than Crysis (I suppose because the physics aren't quite as advanced, I can put the settings on FC2 higher than I could in Crysis). Farcry2 has the wonderfully fluid day-night transitions, which I absolutely love, whereas Crysis, as you many know, has a static day/night system. The day/night does change in that game, but only at scripted times. The only times I've even slept at the safehouses in FC2 were due to not knowing whether the malaria would overtake me if I didn't force myself to rest. I like to let the day turn to night, and back again. Although I find the enemy sight distance, LOS, and awareness to be almost absurdly keen during the day, waiting until nightfall to tackle a well-manned camp usually evens the playing field, as their awareness seems heavily crippled at night time, esp. if you use silenced weapons.
For me, its an absolute joy to take a jeep off-road through the savannas and deserts, or an air boat down one of the waterways. I find that there are usually less patrols on the water, so it's a good way to travel if your destination isn't too far inland. So far I've been saved by my buddies and saved them in fairly equal measure. I like the buddy system and the twists it adds to the missions.
Even though the game boils down to basically just driving around blowing things up, I make an effort to avoid all but the people I HAVE to kill. I also jump at the opportunity to do passport and medicine quests, even though there's no monetary reward, for the same reason. It makes the game feel a bit more

I've got a couple questions. What is it that determines whether the gun store owner will be in the shop? I don't have any missions accepted at the moment, but the shop owner isn't there, and he hasn't been there for a while. Does he not appear if the shop icons lack the "!" over them on the map? I'd really like to do some more missions for him to open up more guns for sale. On a side note, I bought the dart rifle and it's awesome, but I'm bummed that the camo suit doesn't show up visually on the character. You can see he's still in his plain clothes when you get in a car. :(
Speaking of camo, it's pretty useful at night if you remain still (had some goons walk right by me from like 6 feet away), but is there nightvision in this game? My monitor is kinda dim (not in contrast settings but in actual lumen/candela output), and it's very hard to see anything when the night gets to its darkest point in FC2. Some NV goggles or a better monitor would really help. :D
My other questions are about the vehicles. Have you found the hang glider? I saw a screenshot of it and I'd love to try it out. I'm assuming it's at the top of one of the hills/mountains, but I don't know which one, and have yet to successfully scale a mountain on foot so I don't know how I'd get to it, anyway.
Have you driven the dune buggy yet? It's fast and a lot of fun, but it can't take much punishment (from bullets) before it's done for. It handles the terrain bumps and bruises quite nicely, though. It sometimes (always?) spawns at one of the bus stops around the perimeter of the map. I think it's one of the northern two, but I'm not sure. It's my favorite vehicle, so far.

in the mission where you have to choose between going to the church to save Father Maliya or go to Mike's Pub to save your friends, I chose saving my friends. Unfortunately, in the resulting firefight, they both died before I could help them (in fact, I don't think the game even gave me the chance to help them), and then I ended up dying and going into that scripted desert sequence. Fast forwarding, it appears I have 2 new friends, but I'm wondering if it's possible to survive the Bar fight without losing your friends, or if they pretty much have to die? I guess you won't be able to answer that question since your buddy probably died before that mission. Which did you choose? friends, or the church?

The weapons dealer doesn't appear when you're in a mission, and sometimes I think he just stops appearing until you progress through the story missions. And maybe if it's too late at night. Though maybe you know this by now, you're farther than I am! I haven't done the Maliya mission and I'm not at the second map... hell I didn't even know there was one, now I'm excited to get to see it. Damn this is a big game.
I read that the glider was at a far northern safe house on the first map, possibly a hidden one (I've found a few of them), and I spent an hour looking but didn't find it. Have you seen it yet, or has a mission forced it on you?
The buggy is awesome and I jump for joy every time I find one, it's like the only vehicle I can outrun anybody in. But every time I get in a boat, I end up ambushed and swimming back to shore, so I avoid them.
This game doesn't even have a simple flashlight, let alone NV. Too bad, it would be cool having to rely on it at night to get around in the deep woods, being careful not to give away your position, switching it off when you get near people, then just relying on moonlight or bonfires or whatever... plus, it's just fun to use flashlights in games. Lighting effects r fun.

Buying that really bumped up the fun factor. It almost feels overpowered... instant, silent death and you don't even have to get a headshot. I just miss carrying around my rocket launcher, it wasn't a very practical weapon, but every once in a while I'd come up with an excuse to use it. The explosions are satisfying, you could fire it into a camp and kill a group, blow up their shed, and light everything on fire, just like that.

Ah! Sorry for spoiling the surprise for you! Yes, it's a huge game, indeed. That's odd that you seem to be finding a lot of patrols on the waterways. I find that when I drive a car, I pretty much HAVE to drive through the wilderness, because sticking to the road means getting ambushed probably once every 15-30 seconds. I've managed to travel fairly long distances in the boat (half a map) without being attacked once. I admit there are some sections with more boat patrols, but for the most part I've found it to be a really serene, picturesque way to travel.
Last night, I found a really cool area. It's around this huge mountain on the second map, if you go way up and around to the west/northwest, there's a hill near the mountain with a hang glider(!), and a hard-to-see slope right underneath it that has a Golden AK47 waiting on it! I'm sorry for spoiling yet another surprise, but I wanted to let you know that things like that are out there, waiting to be discovered. I didn't even know there were little easter eggs like Gold weapons lying around. I've got the gold AK in my weapon crate so I can whip it out whenever I want to raid in style. I put it away at the safehouse almost immediately because I was afraid it would tarnish or something! I've got two savepoints right at that spot, so I can load them up to give you better directions to it (in the PC verison, you can save/load anywhere). One last little spoiler, the 2nd map is even more beautiful than the first.
One more tidbit about the dune buggy: So far, I've been totally unable to get the thing to roll over. I've driven it down hills, and I've flipped it, but the roll cage always seems to roll me right side up. I don't know if I've just been getting lucky or if you can count on it to always behave that way. Pretty useful if it's always that way, though.

there is a lot of really cool level design throughout this game.. Just when you start feeling like everything looks the same, BAM! you find a unique little spot with some item or other hidden in it (usually diamonds). I'm definitely having more fun with this game than I did with the original Far Cry.

This game seems like it would be hell for someone with OCD. Hundreds of those diamonds out in the middle of nowhere. Even when I know there's a case a stone's throw away from me, sometimes it takes me a while just to find it.

Those check-point/roadblock camps can sometimes be a breeze to get through, if you get lucky. I tend to just drive right through them, hitting anyone that's in the way but remaining careful not get stuck/stopped. As long as they don't damage your engine enough to slow the car down, they will eventually stop chasing you and return to their posts, even though you can't actually outrun them (they match your speed). If your engine starts smoking its time to fight back as you're dead in the water until your repair the engine (which you can do on all vehicles even without purchasing the repair upgrades, btw). Fleeing works on the boats too, but because the waterways are usually more confined compared to the open landscape, I suppose you have a greater chance of getting 'shotdown' on a boat. I guess choosing one or the other is mostly situational, based on the lay of the land. Sometimes, the river route takes you exactly where you need to be, and with fewer enemy checkpoints than the alternate route by land. As you know, sometimes the rivers are a waste of time. :)
