what is the advantage to sampling someone else's loop?
Is it just a laziness thing?
I use sampled hits all the time, but to take an entire loop just feels like it would be cheating badly. programming drums is the most fun part of making making music electronically. (just my opinion.)

hmm. depends on how you use the sample really. pretty much all the music i make is with hand programmed beats, and its tiresome and awefully time consuming, but i prefer the result:)

Take the loop, chop it into pieces and play the basic loop then make little variations on it then snare rolls rushes and stuff like that. Make the song have some sort of synth bass. Give it a intro and a breakdown in the middle. Add some sci-fi sound effects and hey presto, it's the 90's again.

it depends on what context you're sampling the material
i personally sample drum material sometimes because of the rhythm and syncopation, the general groove of the beat, and the humanisation. sometimes i sample because of the actual sound rather than the rhythm, you know...the way the drums have been recorded (if the material is a breakbeat, or live recorded drums), the processing involved (or lack of processing).
ultimately, it's all personal preference. just like music is anyways.
why should you care why someone samples the infamous break by the drummer of The Winstons, or why someone samples Planet Rock's infectious¹ drums?
just go with it
¹please note that this is a personal view, and should not be regarded as general opinion

i almost exclusively used chopped up breaks and drum beats from others tracks for my drums. of course, i tweak the sounds, trim them, add all sorts of effects, so it's no necessarily noticeable, but i love the way it comes out.
amon tobin said it best when describing sampling in that he likes the little big extra sound thats left in there when using sampled material. it's not just one isolated instrument, you've got the decay from others, whatever sounds are floating around in the mix, and it adds a great amount of character to something as simple as a bass drum.

Yeah even the silence isn't silent, there's something there, like you can hear the air. It's like that silent sound they used for Lawrence of Arabia. It wasn't pure silence, but recorded "silence". Apparently it is such a popular sound for films it was named "Silence is Golden".

has to be 100% original or whats the point?
first i did the old cut and paste, using an audio editor to build up loops from individual drum hits.
then i moved on to making vst drum kits in cubase, still it took long to mix down the tracks then still have to do post editing to make the 16bit sound good.
presently for the last 3 years i use reason to program drums and its super fast and easy to import drum hits, assemble drum kits, and export samples.

i usually process my drums a lot, i never use loops as foundation but rather one hit samples, usually creations of my own, but if there is a good one in my library i will use it!
if i want a good ol' hiphop type break i will of course use a sample loop, and chop it up

I never resample other drums, any beat i do is made from scratch, i like to layer drum parts too, dunno why, i just never got into sampling stuff that much, maybe i'm missing out on some fun

Nothing is 100% original get your head out of your arse.
Anyway, I like sampling it's always fun to see how you can take it. the whole of the music most of us listen to is based around stealing. I like stealing it's fun.

I sample a lot of rolls from dub tracks or little bits of interesting percussion from shit like Cal Tjader. But they almost always end up being completely gutted. Don't copy me.

I need a long, clean Flugel horn in G in wav-format. Can't find any anywhere. Could anyone contribute with a link, or something? Thanks.
