Resident Evil 4 controls + Event Horizon setting + System
Shock enemies = fun :-)

This game has cool menus, they're floating holograms that
pop out of your mask, you can rotate the screen around them
and it's nifty

Do it, the atmosphere is intoximacating.

Derelict spaceships/space stations are among my favorite
settings for games/books/movies/operas.

All the trailers make it look like a crappy and boring
version of crusader (no remorse/no regret). How does it
relate to the crusader games?

as far as I know, the only real connection to Crusader is
the suit the guy wears in DS... I remember Crusader, it was
fucking awesome, but a lot more 'Mad Max/Road Warrior' in
style than Dead Space

It's slow-paced survival horror with an emphasis on ammo
conservation and puzzle solving, really has nothing common
with Crusader. The combat is RE4 over-the-shoulder style and
the character progression is similar, you buy new gear and
customize your weapons and armor. Storytelling is a
combination of radio conversations and System Shock 2 style
audio-logs you pick up that flesh out what happened on the
ship.

You also get some ''magic'' abilities, which I wasn't
expecting and I'm not sure just HOW important these
abilities ultimately become. I just got telekinesis to lift
objects and bodies, clear/block paths, etc.

Feels like I'm on the Nostromo from Aliens. An Alien vs
Predator game would be the cat's pajamas on this engine.

It won't have the predator in it, but I'm carefully watching
over this game. It'll be on PS3 and 360 too, and the
development team is working very closely with the art
director from the film Aliens, to make sure this game ends
up looking as close as possible to the movie in every
aspect. Game Informer (I think it was) had a cover story
issue for the game some months back, with several early
screen shots, and even early on the art direction looked
almost perfect. Aside from that magazine, I can't seem to
find any screen shots or media for the game online. If
you're a fan of the AVP game series, this is one to watch
for.

Yeah, that could be cool... even though it's Sega published,
Gearbox might be up to the task, if they have the budget. A
game that really looks and feels like Aliens is just...
fuck, bring it on.

Dead Space has been just awesome so far. And it's one of the
few games that really does SPACE justice. The vacuums are
well done... particles and air get sucked into the airlocks,
vision distorts, bodies and refuse float around clanking off
walls, liquid pouring out of pipes and instantly boiling and
evaporating, sound dampens low enough to hear my own
heartbeat, it's good stuff. One extra-vehicular excursion
had me freaking out, I had about 2 seconds of oxygen left,
my guy was wheezing and I couldn't tell up from down, but I
somehow randomly scrambled into the right airlock upside
down.

I can't watch the vacuum scene from 2001 without feeling
lightheaded. That shit just scares me for some reason.

I've reserved my copy of this for when it hits the UK next

Ophecks? How long do you think it's going to take you to
finish it?

Also how much strategy is there involved in the combat in
regards to things like limb dismemberment? Is it important
to get to know your enemies if you're going to survive or
can you just blast your way through?

Out Of The Box

i've watched this episode last thuesday, and they played
Dead Space live on the webcam with their commentary. It
starts about halfway through the video.

Me too. Why is it that PC games are always a week+ behind
their console counterparts? I tell myself it's because they
need a bit more time to finish polishing the PC version, but
would one week really make a difference in the scheme of
things? It seems like there might be something worse afoot,
perhaps a marketing decision to push consoles and put PC on
the back-burner.

Publishers blame piracy. They're scared that if they release
a multi-platform game on all formats on the same day, people
will just download the PC version (which is usually cracked
instantly these days)

It's bullshit of course. In a way, i'm glad Fallout 3 leaked
early on the 360. Maybe they're realise that it's not just
PC's that attract piracy.

Points: 16982 Status: Regular | Followup to Brisk: #02246264 | Show recordbag

Ah, I guess that makes sense. It is bullshit, but I can see
where they're coming from (sort of). Like you said, 360 has
a large pirate community so PC doesn't deserve all the
blame.

Using Resident Evil 4 as a reference because that's the
standard...playing on normal, I'd say it's a bit easier, I'm
not dying as often. It has the same degree of inventory
management... you'll never really be wanting for bullets,
but you can't spray and pray if you want to feel stocked and
safe. Normal is pretty standard, nothing too daunting, and I
hear hard is just TOO hard for a first play. The replay
value is definitely there, I'll be trying it.

Dismembering is more than a gimmick, you do need to be
precise and pick monsters apart when you're encountering
multiple enemies. Which is often... because of the way they
get around, it's common to get surrounded, or attacked from
behind. Cutting off their mobility, sight or offense is
required in cases where you can be swarmed. Their anatomies
are pretty fucked up, so depending on what you're fighting,
you've got plenty of differing targets and reasons to
experiment with the weapons.

Probably gonna take me 12 hours to beat it... nowhere near
as epic as RE4, but as long as any other game of this ilk.
And not a second wasted, it's well paced and the puzzles
aren't obtuse.

Interestingly, you have a navigator that points you in the
right path to objectives... not just an arrow, it shows you
EXACTLY the path you need to walk. But the game is designed
so that you're never required to use it. You need to press a
button to get any nav feedback at all, so you can go through
the whole game without seeing it. The game is claustrophobic
as hell and I get disoriented, so I use it preeetty
liberally. If you like being lost and feeling your way
around, tack on a couple more hours to the playtime.

There's this game, RE4, and LittleBigPlanet that almost
makes it worth buying a PS3, even though the price is
ridiculous.

I was loving it, until i had my first game-stopping bug. The

I'm not far into the game, but so far the atmosphere is
great. It's like a perfect blend of Alien and The Shining.
Or as Ophecks said, its often reminiscent of Event Horizon.

The camera is slightly different that standard 3rd-person.
Instead of floating directly dead-center behind the
character, its more of an over-the-right-should view. It
works well because it's still 3rd person, but zoomed in a
bit and it gets the character's body out of the way nicely.
The controls are just slow enough to really get your heart
going when there's a monster barreling down on you, but they
never feel wonky or frustrating.

Oh, and the menus/suit functions are super sweet. Definitely
feels like a well produced sci-fi movie.

I'm really rather excited for the UK release on Friday. It's
been a while since I've been hyped enough about a game to
actually go and watch trailers, behind the scenes
documentaries etc. I'm a massive sci-fi/horror fan and this
pushes all my buttons. I get a nice looking book with my
pre-order too. Great! I'm not really adding anything to the
thread but if I jabbered on like this to my friends they
would be disappointed with me.

jeez, I just had an even worse mouse bug.. the camera just
started spinning 360's after a rode in an elevator, i
couldnt stop it by messing with any control settings and had
to quit the game. I tried making it to a save spot but the
camera was spinning so bad I started feeling nauseous. I'm
wondering if these mouse bugs are due to my microsoft (vista
compatible) wireless mouse and keyboard combo, or the game
itself. I'm really enjoying the game besides this mouse
nonsense. About to give it another go.

Although none of the gameplay elements really stand out as
completely original, it's still probably the most
entertaining and visceral survival horror game I've ever
played. The dialogue writing has only been bad in a couple
spots, too!

The are definitely original touches here and there (the HUD
being case in point), I'm just referring to the core
gameplay boiling down to "go here, find this" or "go here,
turn this on/fix this." That's not a bad thing, either. It
doesn't matter if the core gameplay is simple when the ride
is so much fun.

Also I don't even think I'm half way through the game yet
(though I can't be sure as I don't know how many chapters
there are), so there could be a lot more to the game that I
haven't seen, as well.

I'd say Normal is much easier than Resident Evil 4, I rarely
died. Hard is quite a bit tougher, only then do you really
have to pick your spots and not fuck around. I only carried
two guns on me, so that I could stock up on ammo and max
them both out, rather than spread the nodes around 3 or 4
guns.

What a game. Much of it is blatantly copied from Event
Horizon, but that's one of my favourite films. The immersing
atmosphere is all about eerieness, and it succeeds. All the
scary bits are choreographed brilliantly. Some of the
environments had me pick up my jaw from the floor
frequently, both in the game and irl.

I didn't like the tedious asteroid blasting minigame much
though, but so far, no regrets.
