Recommend your favourite Windows based media playing
software for audio files. I use Winamp at the moment but am
looking for something else to try out.

Thanks xltronic.com/mb

I love foobar, it has good options for different
display setups, uses idtags (of course) and plays a variety
of formats, all with almost 0 performance hit. I've found it
to be very stable and efficient.

#1 you should have stopped using winamp about ten years ago,
it has become so buggy and bloated with code (at least the
last time i used it) not to mention being owned by whatever
big evil corp (aol is it?).

foobar (wow, i actually just typo'd that as food bar) is an
excellent little player, and being open source it is both
quite stable and have tons of plug ins and modifications to
make. i have many friends who swear by it, but personally i
don't because...

having been on mac os x for the last few years (killed my
mb, now on a fucking gateway) i couldn't help but come to
love the layout of itunes. the biggest problems are with
memory usage and that if you don't have your id3 tags proper
your library becomes an unnavigable mess, but if you get
that in order is quite wonderful to have all your music at
your fingertips without having to go rooting your endless
amounts of subfolders.

your third option would be vlc, which is what i use to play
files before i bother to import them into itunes. it's not
as robust as foobar, and is more focused on being a video
player, but does well in a pinch and uses a really minimal
amount of memory.

Unfortunately I am not hip to the groove of what's happening
in the world of music listening software. I'll try Foobar
for its low resource usage.

I'd use foobar if it had a cooler name. ''Foobar'' just
sounds gross.

I still use Winamp, never really fucks up on me. I usually
use a skin which allows for docked toolbar, currently I'm
using "Big Bento". Now that's a fucked up name.

Itunes is horrible imo.

Does VLC have a decent library function though? I already
use it for videos but I'm not sure whether its good for
flicking though thousands of files, making playlists, etc.

to be fair i stopped using it around 2003, so it may very
well have gotten better, but man did it suck back then. the
jump from 2 to 3 was just awful.

(i actually do keep 2.95 installed, just so that i can still
get baked and watch the astounding milkdrop visualizer.)

ah, milkdrop! I had forgotten about that beauty... that
plugin and electronic music go hand in hand, as far as my

yeah, it's actually now the default visualizer bundles with
the new winamp, but for some reason it doesn't react to the
music in the same way that it used to.

odd fact: the guy who wrote milkdrop lives here in santa
cruz and a friend of a friend once went to his house and
smoked him out as a thank you.

One word: JetAudio.

Seriously, nothing has anything on this playa. Sound quality
is awesome and there loadsa extra features, like CD ripping
and lyric viewing, as well as sound recording and radio.
|perfect for the kinda guys that use this forum.

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2008-10-15 09:02 [#02245583]

to claim that a software audio player has good sound quality
(or any variation in sound quality whatsoever) seems kind of
silly to me. and cd ripping, audio recording, and radio
should hardly be considered extras anymore - for a media
center-based player these better be fucking standard.

and i looked at this "playa's" website, and itunes has
everything on it, every single feature is matched by itunes
and most mp3 players out there.

PLUS you have to pay for some features like mp3 encoding,
the "crystal clear" 32-bit sound (read: unnecessary, no one,
and i mean no one can tell the difference between 16 and
24-bit, so why 32?) and AND AN EQUALIZER???

I call bullshit.

diggin' thru subfolders? try having ALL your music in the

Uh-huh.

And which media players offer 32 bit sound anyway? Let alone
free ones?

And it does undeniably give better quality sound than other
PLAYERS (if you are so rigid as to demand the correct
spelling). How can you say that doesn't matter? Do you not
care about the quality of your choons?

Plus, what are you actually saying about the equalizer?

Maybe you're right about the extra features. Maybe they're
just features, rather than extras.

Which PLAYA do you use then, hed?

i'm saying that 32 bit sound is hugely unnecessary. it's one
of those audiophile things that people claim they can hear
the difference just to warrant spending that extra cash. i
mean, you're listening to MP3s! it's like drinking cheap
vodka out of a really expensive glass - it may look nice,
but it's still gonna taste like shit.

and you say "Let alone free ones?" like this one offers 32
bit playback for free, which it does not. look at the
features list - you gotta pay for the pro version to get
that. do you even have a 32 bit sound card to take advantage
of this amazing sound quality? because otherwise all your
hard earned dollars are going to waste because even if the
software is in 32 bit, it's still being downgraded to a
"lowly" 16 bits once it gets to your speakers.

other than this 32 bit wonderment, THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY
FOR ONE SOFTWARE AUDIO PLAYER TO REPRODUCE SOUND BETTER THAN
ANY OTHER.

and i'm saying you have to PAY for an EQUALIZER? that is
horse shit. every single mp3 player i have ever seen at
least offers an eq for free, even ones which do have a silly
pro-version on top of it.

check out my previous posts - i use itunes because it has a
great ui (which jetaudio is blatantly ripping off, and has
only just implemented - read: bugs), syncs with my ipod
effortlessly, and is stable as fuck, even if it does use a
bit more memory than some of the competitors. plus it offers
all of those "extras" with no need to pay for a pro
version.

seriously, what is cd ripping without an mp3 encoder?
fucking useless.

Yeah- mebbe you're right.

I used to have an X-Fi card, therefore 32 bit sound. I'll be
honest and say that my media player prolly didn't have
32-bit capabilities, so I effectively wouldn't have had it.
To be fair though, before that I had shitty onboard sound,
so anything better than that would sound amazing to me.
Thanks for bringing that up- now I'll have a look out for
it. I would get an external X-Fi, now that I have a laptop,
but I have to install XP first, since Vista is a complete
and utter bag of shite, as it doesn't even seem to support
5.1 sound for laptops.

I still disagree with you saying that all media players have
the same quality of sound- Jet Audio is better than some
shit like WMP. You can't argue against that.

Foobar looks pretty good- I think it uses less memory than
JetAudio, though am gonna stick with JA. You make a very
good argument though. I may download FB some time.

As I have said, a media player easily syncing with an iPod
means nothing to me, as I have said in the iPod thread,
since I don't like them, but yes, Foobar is good for a lot
of things and has the 'extras' for free, which JA does not.

vista does support 5.1 sound fine. actually, it's interface
for dealing with audio hardware is arguably one of the few
improvements it made on xp. just right click on the speaker
icon in your taskbar, select playback device, and choose
whichever you wish. double clicking will give you access to
all sorts of options and diagnostics, including the ever
essential 5.1 speaker test.

Yeah, you're right- not a massive improvement, and there
aren't many options, but it is a slight mark of progress
against XP.

Which OP do you have- Ultimate, Elite? because I only have
Basic. That make any difference? A lot of people have
complained, saying it doesn't work on laptops.

i'm actually using TinyVista, a special hacked version made
by the fine people at eXperience. it's vista ultimate at its
core, but with all the fat trimmed off. it runs incredibly
well on older boxes, and even better on newer ones ("omg
really??"), and i have yet to run into any problems with
missing components at all.

it strips out tons of unnecessary goop like windows
messenger, msn messenger, windows media player, windows
movie maker, those huge language files, drivers (what you
can't download them yourself?), windows defender, sidebar
and gadgets, and tons more, as well as some really great
registry tweaks right out of the box (no autoplay, no 2 GIG
memory requirement, etc)

it takes the entire vista install and crams it into one 699
mb cd burnable iso, and the final install folder is only
2.44 gigs (remember when your hard drive was that big?). oh
and the install has all the newest updates slipstreamed, so
no more waiting hours to download the newest service pack
and 20,000 critical updates to go along with it. all in all,
with my own personalized scripts to install all the drivers
on my laptop, a fully functioning install of windows
including ff3, firewall, antivirus and my entire ableton
live dj setup can be done in under an hour and a a half with
a solid 50 clicks maximum.

Wow- quite a set up you got there, my friend!

I will definately have to look into that. very soon. It
sounds just like what everyone should have got from the new
Windows OS, rather than something worse, like most people
actually got.

Do you think it is worth getting an updated Vista though,
rather than just Linux? Surely you would prefer it. Nothing
everything is compatible with it, but if you don't play
games, that won't effect you.

Linux is certainly the future!

Indeed, indeed!

By the future I mean more people using it- It is about time
that a well-meaning company (or community) that is actually
good at what it does monopolised the OS market for a change!

When I compare free, sublime, community-driven Linux with
shitty, universal, over-priced MS Windows, I actually vom' a
little.
