What do people use? I was thinking of the Akai MPD32 but would love to know of something cheaper that is great. I will be wanting it for Ableton and MAX/Msp controlling mainly.
Thanks for any info guys.

I have a behringer BCR2000 that has a cuntload of rotary knobs and toggle buttons, and 6 combined rotary knobs (ones that can rotate AND be used as toggle button), but alas i always seem to be missing out on some sliders. The slider version only has 8 sliders, which is not that much... Still i can recommend the BCR2000

I've got an oxygen61 that works quite well. 9 Sliders, 8 rotary knobs, and a bunch of other programmable buttons are nice features.

I bought an m-audio controller second hand and it worked for a little while and then died. Mostly everyone has good things to say about them, though.
I use a Roland JP-8000 as my controller. Getting all the knobs and faders to work with various programs can be a bit tricky, but I prefer it to the cheap, almost toy-like feel of the action on most mid-range midi keyboards.

I want pads, so I think it's going to be a toss up between the Korg and MPD24 (I don't see any reason to go for the 32 for my purposes).

korg has an xy pad that does flams and rolls for you. wherever your finger is determines how fast or volume. also its so easy to do scenes and setups, just hold one button and press the pad and you can assign it to whatever midi channel or note cc#. also the korg has the most sensitive and awesome pads and they light up which is neat . pads have aftertouch too. corners register hits..
mpd24's got knobs and faders, so , if youre controlling a lot that can be useful.. but the pads dont have aftertouch, and the corners dont register hits, only the face of the pads..
only buy a trigger finger if youre seriously desperate and wanting to save money. or, if it just feels right. thats what it comes down to really, what makes you feel the best...

I got an MPD24 for the knobs/faders/pads combo. It turned up yesterday and I'm pleased as punch with it.
