what he said. coined by dickie dawkins circa 1976 in "the
selfish gene". abused by internet users since 1989.

this thread should just be an e-mail to w M w. He can recite
an entire book on memes with his dick tied behind his
tonsils.

The key concept is 'replicator' (with heredity). A fire
replicates but it has no heredity; accumulating information
is not transferred from generation to generation in fire
like with the DNA/RNA/gene replicators. Memes started as a
thought experiment searching for replicators other than
genes that might be on earth. The question was what else
replicates, and really 'memes' are basically 'culture',
anything that is imitated from person to person. A meme
doesn't have to be in a brain, it can lie temporarily
dormant in a book or something. Meme vs. gene is an analogy
so both don't necessarily behave the same, but the paradigm
did allow some insights. Ex. a letter to your grandmother vs
a chainletter. The latter has instructions for its own
replication like 'OMG, this is SO TRUE u have to try it.
copy & paste this letter to 10 OTHR PEEPL and u will receeve
a kiss from someont u lov 4 REAL. I did it and it workd, and
if you don't do it you will DIE, OMG'. The chain letter
works like a virus hijacking the brain hardware to replicate
itself. Replication is like that rare wolfram cellular
automata rule that just happens to produce very complex
results (life) since the population can vary due to
mutations (and sex) so the most fit (best at replicating)
get selected and bird wings and snail eyes and peni evolve.
Technology is part of culture and you can kind of see it
evolve though differently than dna because huge leaps are
possible.

That is very interesting. I wonder if there is potential for
an Anti-meme. An idea or action so strikingly bad or
non-sequitur that not only would it be impossible to
replicate, it perhaps could shut down those very same
processes through which memes breed.

The Jonestown mass suicides is my favorite meme.

is darwinism a meme? and if so, what makes it different from
religion?

Memes are an idealistic fantasy. There is no motion without
moving things, right.

Darwinism and science in general would qualify as memes as
defined by the theory (ideas that replicates from brain to
brain) but science is distinguished by being based on
evidence rather than faith (faith = belief without
evidence). Really, human minds are primitive and religion
can almost be healthy for some in a weird way.. for people
like the 'crocodile people' for example maybe (who
ritualistically inflict scars on their backs so they look
like crocodiles who they have to share their river with).
But mostly its corrupt L ron hubbard style viral
manipulative stuff (saw a youtube where evangelical
christians brought in a cardboard cutout of the US president
for the kids to pray to wtf). But what is true and what is
comforting are different.

Standards have really slipped.
