He has a show on BBC Radio 1, 10pm - midnight. The Peel Sessions have been going for a long, long time. Its basically when people come into the studio and play for the show. They record them and release some. You can listen online. go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio1

These sessions originate (as some other sessions made for UK radio) from some law (that was revoked like several years ago) that was meant to protect live musicians, so it was only allowed to have a certain number of hours (a very small actually) of recorded music played daily. So, as it was, a lot of musicians recorded these sessions meant to be played only once and never again... Luckilly, John Peel has had many of thiose recorded. Woofer, have you heard Ae and BoC Peel sessions?

John Peel is, as far as I'm aware, the only radio DJ in England with no playlist whatsoever. This country sucks when it comes to doing anything non-profitable. Ae Peel sessions are well good. I think Kid 606 has one too...

He's the best DJ i've ever heard, really diverse selection of stuff, all chosen by him personally.
He does thursday nights from his own house, and still has a band playing there.
(He's on holiday this week though)

just remembered this amusing PEEL related item from www.thesmokehammer.com :
Blair persuades Bonn conference that John Peel should be new Afghan President ...
British Prime Minister Tony Blair scored a diplomatic triumph this afternoon when his UK delegation persuaded the UN Afghan Conference that the broadcaster John Peel should be the new leader of Afghanistan.
A Foreign Office official said: "John will appeal both to the conservative Pashtun south - who prefer men to wear beards - as well as to the northern tribes who like music".
The Americans gave their approval when the Prime Minister explained to President Bush that Peel is regarded in his native country as a 'British Tom Hanks.'
Peel will be expected to repair Afghanistan's shattered infrastructure, restore relations with Iran and Uzbekistan, unify the volatile stand-off between rival factions in the Southwest, and continue with his radio 4 series Home Truths on Saturday mornings.
Mr Blair said the disc jockey will be installed as Afghanistan's new President at a swearing-in ceremony tomorrow - against his wishes if necessary.

Giles Petersons Worldwide sessions are meant to be without playlists, but there are still record companies that will pay to have him play stuff. Mo Wax for example sent him a shit load of free stuff to play the new DJ Shadow track. John Peel would say "Actually I'd rather play some dodgy Scandinavian electro but thanks all the same". Corruption. Thats the difference.

Giles plays some good stuff but does get on my tits. I think he tries to sound a bit too cool and the way he announces the tracks means you don't know what you're hearing. He's all over the bloody place. Peel is just natural and easy to listen to.
Peel is not 70, he's 83.
