i'm not kidding...americans are very suseptible to other
countires musical influences, and we've seen theno dance
invasion after another. Recently out MTV station had
developed a comercial looking glass show called trl where
viewers can vote on their top vids. this show has become one
of the most rated shows in the contry, and very much
dictates what is hot or not in our countires musical
mainstreem. When a certian sound/artist/look makes it on the
polls or to the higher slots, companies devour it only to
sell it back to us in jewcases or mp3 (capitalism at it's
finest). In the past i've been nonchalant, mostly beacusw
it's been pop, but i've seen electronic slowly rear it's
ugly head here and there, and started to worry. I'm writing
this because in the last few days a track by a very
untalented kylie monogue(not sure about the last name) has
dominated these charts the last couple of weeks with her hit
"can't get you out of my head." Compaines have also noticed
this, (the vid is on HEAVY rotation), and soon the populous
will witness the rape of techno here in america. (if you
were areound for that whole 90's dance techno, you know what
i'm talking about...but i predict a bigger catastrophy).

Any thoughts on this???

yeah, well it's already sort of happened i think. i mean,
there's still pure stuff like aphex; i don't think that's is
possibly a target for commericalization. mtv is evil.
boycott them.

Case in point: the director of the music video show i work
for suggested we have a techno episode. i said, "that's
great. we can play aphex & squarepusher and stuff!" and she
was like "who? i mean techno like paul oakenfold and sasha
& digweed and BT."

i rest my case.

i don't know if aphex is soooo pure, didn't they use some
aphecx music for tv comercials? i'm pretty sure they gave
rdj roayalties for it. but that's kinda off topic. I have
also been seeing other comercials use electronic to seel
products for a long while, damn moby. and now mitsubishi has
a car called the "2003 mitsubishi eclipse re-mix."

The commercial thing isn't that bad. Any published artist in
the UK doesn't have a choice in whether or not their music
gets used in commercials. The BBC makes the deal and then
gives the artist their cut. So even if he didn't want to
sell his songs to commercials he would have to.

How do you think he got so rich anyway?

well moby is a sell-out anyway. he + aphex are two
different concepts. i remember reading aphex once wrote
music for a virgin airlines advert, but they declined to use
it cause it sounded like a plane crashing.

i recently visited vancouver last month, and watched some
"much music (not sure what it's called)" to see what's
popular on their airwaves, and say a diffrent taste. mostly
rock. Here in america hip hop and pop has tons of control.
and techno is already flooded in all of that.

No matter what goes "main stream" there will always be an
undergound culture to counteract it. Yea Rich has made some
tunes for commercials and Come to Daddy is in circulation on
mtv2. But i think about it like this, If i was Richard and
someone came to me askin me for the rights to a song for a
commercial and waved some cash in my face i would probrobly
hit them up on the offer. After all this is his job. And i
would in no way consider it selling out. Most people ( i
have experienced) heard of "Apex Twins" as they say. But
they have never heard the music and probrobly never will.
But if you have noticed the "underground" music that they
try to make popular usually never blows up. It will actually
fizzle out after a month of airplay. Like take for instence
Ween, they had a video hit "push the lil dasies" years ago.
And there was alot of talk about ween. But it never went any
further than that. Ween is now still pushing and the ween
fans are true fans and always will be. you will probrobly
never see another ween video again.
-Am I making any sense? I'm stoned and tired. heh

Nanotech: You're right about that Much Music tv station.
That's what it's called. And indeed it plays rock music
much (no pun intended) to much. It's really sad and I've
written them saying we need to have an electronica segment.
Like at least one episode a week would be good enough you
know? Just something! Because in all honesty, I believe
just playing what the mainstream wants to hear is a form of
bias. It shows the company has no thoughts of it's own.
Now you could go and say the station is listener
supported...sure! Play some Aphex / Autechre then!!
Freaks. I hate it. We over here in the Americas are a
paranoid bunch. We really are. If you get caught listening
to 'weird noises' you're laughed at or at least put down buy
weird faces...maybe angry. I wish we could accept all forms
of music but that day just isn't going to happen I don't
think.

And about this electronica hitting mainstream like that
aforementioned Kylie Monogue (sp?) that's a sad case too.
I've heard subtle hints to underground sounds in a bunch of
stuff...including Britany Spears' video where she dances
with a thong over her pants and everyone is really hot
(temperature wise) and sweaty. Stuff like that makes
electonica look bad. After awhile people will get so used
to the pop / electronica hybrid they'll start associating
undergound with pop and you just can't do that. Just like
someone on here said that it's all 'techno'. It'll be like
"I listen to electronic music." "Oh you mean like daft punk
or moby?"

At that point the underground will only get deeper...but how
far can it get? How many weirder noises can you muster up?
How much longer can Autechre and the rest hang on?

I feel like one day we'll loose our favorite music.

heh.. sumtimes i wonder what instrament there are using in
there songs.... just plain strange!! I love it.

anyways... back on topic. There is no way Aphex or any
underground electronic will become mainstream. Its just the
fact that it dosnt strike a cord in the mojority of the
population... and probably never will. We had a similar
thred awhile back about this subject... sum people seem to
think that Aphex is already mainstream. but not me... just
imagin... Aphex with high rotation on Rick Ds weekly top
forty lol!!! That will NEVER happen!!
