For windows I use daemon tools, but I am lead to believe
that it has some spy ware and or back door properties.

Plus adverts I seem to remember. Any other ideas?

i use virutalclonedrive by elaborate bytes. its freeware,
doesn't have any spyware (as you said daemon tools
supposedly does) and is extremely simple. just install, let
it mount the virtual drive and simply double click on any
image you wish to be mounted and it's right there.

Does daemon have adverts? I have an older version and
haven't noticed it doing anything funny.

supposedly it installs some kind of adware - prolly a data
miner or something small.
