I had a pc and laptop both hooked to a router, in turn hooked to a modem in turn hooked to the dsl phone line. It all worked fine 2 weeks ago, then recently the internet started being 6 times slower and I couldn't do stuff like upload mp3's (says 'the connection was reset while the page was loading or something' after loading a long time). I stumbled around in unsavy lamenness; changed inside phone wiring (no help), changed modem (no help), used modem only w/o router (no help), called dsl repair people (said my connection seemed strong but my browser was the problem). Well why do BOTH the pc and laptop have a slow connection then (winxp pc = most firefox pages load sorta normally but issues like mp3s don't upload and email takes forever etc... win2000 laptop = firefox doesn't work at all and internet explorer is super slow) I wonder if I got a worm/virus. I did download the game 'chips challenge' so wonder if that was it. But I downloaded to the pc.. would the worm just travel over the router to make the laptop slow also? I guess I'll go buy windows xp and completely reload the os on the laptop (hopefully a reload would remove a worm). Or maybe its just some other problem. And this concludes my harrowing tale of adventures at sea. |

since it is a slow connection on two machines it is very unlikely you have a software problem. call your isp again and the next time they say your browser is the problem ask to talk to someone who knows what the fuck they're saying. |

It was kinds scary calling the first time. I called the official number off the mailed statement but outsourced to india where a lady had me enter a code on an internet explorer page that allowed her to control my mouse and be able to see my screen or something. Instructed me to turn off the firewall and eventually concluded I should reinstall internet explorer (I did try uninstalling and reinstalling firefox to the latest version and firefox still doesn't work). Think its a worm? On the winxp pc when I press ctrl-alt-del then click on 'performance' it only appears to be at 0 or 1% (more when I type characters like right now) cpu usage, so maybe that's an indicator its not a worm. |

If your offline programs run fine and your 'perfomance' meter is that low, it's probably not a worm. If you "had" neighbors, I'd ask them how theirs is running, there just might be a lot of traffic. |

That helped a lot and revealed my problem sorta: My DOWNLOAD speed is like 700ish, but my UPLOAD speed is... 6. (for my xp pc). And yeah, that correlates with what I've been experiencing (can't upload a big mp3 but can send a small email even though it takes forever). WTF is my upload all fijucked? |

If you can download it, will give you a list of all the programs sucking your bandwidth. |
