in the past few mixes by them, it would be a challenge to look for segments containing at least 2 minutes of music without them either namedropping themselves, or notifying you of where to purchase their stuff.
Since these mixes and radioshows are free, they have every right to do this. However, in addition to this, the recent output of 'archive material' labeled as 'essential and/or rare', available for hefty sums of money, just seems like a complete overkill and shameless attempt at milking their own product to the very last drop.
I like FSOL, and i like their music but to me they really come across as a bunch of hopelessly arrogant and unpleasant bastards. Why do i care? Well, because i consider FSOL far away from being mainstream, and part of the deal in making underground (for lack of a better word) music is that you don't whine about not making a fortune with your tunes.
So fuck you FSOL for using your mixes as advertisements. There are plenty of other artists who share their mixes without this crap and their records sell because they simply show love for what they do.

FSOL: Nobody, but nobody wants 100 albums of outakes and unreleased "gems" with poorly photoshopped covers. Stick to re-releasing "Expander" which appears to have bankrolled you for the last 10 years at least.

They have pretty much done this their whole career though. All the ISDN radio broadcasts from the 90s were packed with "THIS IS THE FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON" type interludes every 2 mins or so. Doesn't bother me one bit, personally.
FSOL were also quite successful commercially. I think Lifeforms peaked at #2 in the british album sales charts back in '94. Since Garry's transition into hippy however, they have been pretty much shunned by both electronic and psychedelic/rock fans. I do still like The Isness & I really like Alice In Ultraland in places, but yeah, they're definitely not in the publics eye anymore.
I look back at the FSOL catalogue (not to mention the lesser-known classics prior to this) and shit myself at just how awesome they were. Respect is due.

Oh and yeah, Garry still comes across as an arogant, egotistical twat, but hey, it's the music we listen to, not the artist.

If you don't like all these re-issues don't buy them. Only anuses collected every bit of shit an artist releases.
And if you want to moan about how much money they make or don't make, how about YOU stop downloading shit for free. Because that's what ensures artists have sell every scrap of music they have to life a decent life.
And by the way, I've spoken to Cobain and he's a really nice guy - not arrogant at all. If you want arrogant I can give you a few names.

The new Yage album, based on the hippie-post-pinkfloyd sound of The Isness, means to me they kinda lost it. Why not release all the hippie stuff under one name, let's say AA and leave the 'sacred' aliases alone ?
