getting bored with music making

offline cx from Norway on 2008-08-25 14:11 [#02231703]

so like ive been going on with music making almost everyday
for 4 years.. however, as of late its been really dry.
its not so much that i dunno how to make stuff, its more
that i feel ive done most of what i want to do.. i dont
really know what else i could make or what i want to improve
in what ive already made..

that doesnt mean my already made music is perfect, it just
means i dont find much inspiration in that type of music
anymore.
i made a lot of ambient you know and, right now i cant
really listen to a drone or pad and feel much.
i dont have the need to create any orchestral stuff either,
nor idm as it were..

when i apply a reverb to some crazy swoosha thing, it feels
overused, when i try to make slow piano stuff - well, dont
even get me started.
same with everything else..

i do get enjoyment out of my already favorite tracks like
uviol and such, but i REALLY dont want to feel like i cant
find inspiration to create more..

thing is also.. i dont like about 99% of the music i hear
released professionally.. and very few tracks in general
really make me go OMFG you know.. you cant just have this
and that to create an effect anymore on me, it needs to be
something amazing..
are my standards too high already for music i listen to?

i have not really made a proper track in 4 weeks or so.. i
have made a lot of stuff inbetween but nothing i would
consider myself extremely proud of.

i was also afraid to type this out in case of jinxing
myself, but right now, i really feel i might be losing
whatever i had that made me going for so long.. if you want
to leave a challenge for me to do, please do so.. that way i
can be more focused.

god bless music.

if this gives you inspiration, your track 'hive mind' for
example is not just a music track, it's a beautifully
mastered representation of an abstractly probing
philosophical idea that overcame me with something beyond
that which most tracks manage to achieve. it's immersing and
cosmic, an inspiration in itself. i would be deeply saddened
if you cut short your exploration into this area of art

yes the benders always help. try travelling somewhere new
and then going on a bender. change of scenery may help.

I know exactly what you mean. Only it's like this with
everything as well as music. I'm too young for this. I was
thinking just before looking pon dis thread that i can't
actually enjoy an image the way i used to. Show me a
picture, go on. I bet i wont care.

The cause of this problem is simple enough: over exposure to
modern luxuries ect. But how do you undo this...do i really
have to go on a soul searching journey across africa or
something like that....boring....crap.
I'm going to read! Yes read!!! But there's so many things i
need to get on with and they are forever intertwined with
head wrecking things like the internet. I blame the webs for
my recent slump in visual and musical enjoyment. You have to
hack through a jungle of uninteresting data and navigate
through an endless maze of useless links, only to bump into
another IDM that could be appreciated if i wasn't so
impatient. F U C K. Music is.....dead?

Erm...i just heard blips and flips (i think it was
hivemind). Sorry cx. This is what i mean. I Imagine hearing
your stuff before sound was constantly piped down my throat
like cheeseburger slurry, i'd love the blips then.

I suggest you really stop.
Think hard on what you are or what you were before you made
yourself this awful thing. You don't make music the way a
human should, none of us do. I feel like that's why
pulseclock threw a wobbly (coupled with other things). We
are falling apart. See i was going to stop making music a
few months back, you remeber when i got all silly a lil
while ago, but i didn't. I've made some truly lovely music
that feels closer to the stuff i want to make, but it's
happening again. I make music too quickly and it ISN'T
REALLY FUCKING ME. So you have to stop and take time to
really consider the beginning and end of your life and
define what that life will add up to. Then your music will
be really you. So yeah like blah blah blah n stuff.
PULSECLOCK IS DYING AND WE SHARE THE SAME HEART I KNOW IT!
Yeah i don't get it either, i am going off on one sorry.

ok i'm going to have to go now cos the sleeping tablets are
kicking in

have sweet dreams

hopefully better than the most horrible nightmare of my life
that i had last night which has been tormenting me all day!

it's never nice watching one your loved ones die right in
front of you whilst looking into their eyes and believing it
as real. sure as hell makes you appreciate the fact they're
still alive though!

also try to stick to music that is truly essential for you,
no matter if it's old, music that still make you feel
something like 'i wanna dance' or 'i wanted to do that too'

these days i too find quite difficult to hear something that
blows me away.

this was not the case LAZY_TITLE

everyone gets writers block or whatever and needs a
break. get caught up on some movies you want to see, play
some video games, go to the park, etc. you will have fresh
ideas when you come back to it.

also switching up your method might help. do a mix instead
of an original or do something completely on hardware.

This is easy:

TAKE A BREAK!

Felling burnt out is normal in any creative field. Stop
doing what you do until you really feel like you want to do
it again and you'll be fine! Honestly!

(disclaimer: I read none of the posts in this thread, just a
few lines of the first one, but I do think I got the general
idea. However, I searched this page for the word break and
didn't find it.).
