a hello and call for burners

hello all! it's me, checking in on what's going on here in
internet land. i spilled beer on my laptop (again! but this
time i did it and not my roommate) and have since then been
on a computer break (now my days consist of drinking warm
beer, smoking weed, watching old simpsons episodes with the
commentary and masturbating to the one porn dvd i have.

so what has happened in the last few weeks? any new
interesting members? fun topics? gossip-worthy scandals?

i will be leaving for burning man sunday and will be
spending my whole week living in a 21 foot geodesic dome in
the desert with friends and many more strangers.

for those of you who don't know, burning man is an annual
music and arts (and much more) festival that takes place in
nevada, usa. the biggest difference is this is an entirely
non-corporate event - sales involving currency of any kind
are disallowed. so you have to bring EVERYTHING you are
going to need for a week: shelter, food, water, drugs, art,
costumes...

for the week that burning man occurs, it's location, black
rock city, goes from being a desolate desert landscape
(affectionately known as the playa) into the third largest
city in nevada (47,000 people attended last year).

so yeah, it's going to be fucking epic. an entire city that
is one big party for a week straight. this is my first year
going. any there any past or current burners here at xlt?
let's hear a shout out!

i suppose that would be all, i wish you peoples the best in
life (well, not all of you, there's a few who i would like
to see go down in "when flanders failed" style) and love, i
suppose.

only a few, just 360 panoramics of our camp monday morning
as well as the inside of our done. i figured anything i
needed to revisit would be available on flicker soon enough.
the best part is the conversations and the people you meet
tho.

for example, the department of public works are some of the
coolest, nicest, yet most intimidating people i have ever
met. They exude this aura of pure badassedness, but are
still absolutely approachable in nearly any situation (in
black rock city at least, in the default world, who knows).

for example, this guy slim, who i met on my first night in,
which would technically have been early tuesday morning
(after having waited in line for over six hours because a
day long dust storm shut down the entrances to the city),
talked to me and two friends for about 20 minutes at the top
of the man. he was the greeter for the structure and was
talking to every single person who made their way up to the
best vantage point in the entire city. seriously, this guy
had to have talked to at least 100 people per hour. saturday
afternoon we randomly saw him again, ran up and said hello.
he immediately recognized us and even remembered two of our
names! (he missed mine, naturally tho. because, well, it's
nils.) we chatted for a while since, he asked how my first
burn was going, and then we parted ways.

you can see slim in all his man building bad ass, as well as
the most bad ass of all larry harvey the founder of bm, and
a couple of the art structures which were scattered around
href="http://www.boingboing.net/2008/08/26/burning-man-art-
the mostly empty 10 to 2 o'clock area of the city here: target=_blank>http://www.boingboing.net/2008/08/26/burning-
buil.html" man-art-buil.html

more stories to come, if you want. or if i continue drinking
and enjoying having a computer again. and believe me, all
one can do after burning man is talk about burning man.

I saw this one art project, that was 2 semi-trucks taken
apart and put back together, some 50'+ high, so cool. And my
2 year old loves semi-trucks, so he got a kick out if it
also.

The dust storms look crazy, are they as bad as they say-

yeah, that piece, along with quite a few other regular
larger art projects, did not make it to brc this year due to
high gas costs. but harvey announced during a conference at
bm that he has some plans in the works for some year long
installations at black rock, which will hopefully cut down
on those kinds of cut downs.

more stories in a few once i finish copying music from an
external hard drive and am somewhat less fumingly aggrivated
with windows vista (just installed today because i am
borrowing a laptop WHICH DOESN'T EVEN HAVE XP DRIVERS. AT
ALL. ANYWHERE. ON THE INTERWEBS. it's fucked, mang.

well the goggles and bandanna are essential attire for
surviving out in the desert for any period of time due to
sporadic and often brutal dust storms. the goggles serve a
pretty obvious function, and the bandanna goes over your
mouth classic cowboy style to prevent you from getting a
lung full of playa.

the worst storm was sunday night, immediately after the
temple burned, a solemn occasion which is highly contrasted
with the bombastic hooting and blaring rave from all
directions during the burn of the man the night before. my
friends and i ventured over to the other side of the city,
but in the midst came across a solitary, very shallow dome,
from which the most cacophonous noise was emanating. we
decided we had to investigate, and found a group of people
in a circle banging on some crude wooden stringed
instruments, with some guy obviously tripping on about 20
different hallucinogens sending all of the sound through
some kind of delay filters using what im guessing was some
infrared interface.

when we left, we were suddenly alone. the dust was so thick
there were five of use with two maglites and you could only
see three of us at any given time. we eventually found way
to a camp, where a couple of my fellows hunkered down with
borrowed blankets, but i had to pee so i ventured out
bundled up (the desert night is fucking FREEZING) and in my
israeli military issue gas mask to the porta potties (which
were amazingly maintained btw). (i was also wearing a big
camo jacket with a hoodie underneath, so overall i must have
been an intimidating site to behold suddenly out of the
dust.) i found refuge in a larger, handicapped stall and
proceeded to invite others in, smoking a couple bowls and
having some deep conversations, including with a couple sf
kids who had a hard time believing that all i really cared
about at the moment was that i didnt have my laptop and
couldn't be djing myself at bm, despite the fact that the
place is littered with electro, house, and dubstep to be
heard, but lots of shitty breaks t

sounds like a really sweet time. might have to look into it
myself for next year...

also this comparison must be made:

also, i've got on my backpack which i modified slightly to
more comfortably house a water bladder (camel back for the
brand name-stricken), which is another absolute essential
out in the desert. you'll get dehydrated very quickly, and
going even half an hour without a drink of water out there
can be pretty excruciating. i got abandoned while very
drunk one night, lost my camel back, and for the remaining
three days had a sore throat because on my way back, when i
tried to swallow, my throat was so dry and coarse it
actually scratched itself.

the rem concert shirt i got when i was somewhere around 11
doesn't pose much interest i suppose.

the necklaces. the first would be the nitrous cartridge
necklace which we got as a gift, along with a couple hundred
full carts. a bunch of my friends do a whooole lot of whip
its and our resident sculpture artists decided to make a
nitrous tree out of the used carts and wire. as a result, we
had tons of people stopping by to do them. actually, nitrous
is a great drug for the daytime in burning man. let's you
just kill some time comfortably without having to plan ahead
for what your drug adventures.

the second would be the round pendant, which i got for lamp
lighting, an incredible fulfilling experience. across
burning man, there are these huge spires from which lamps
are hung and lit each night. it is the largest all kerosene
lamp lighting in the world. 11,000 lamps are lit each night.
eleven. THOUSAND. disney land/world used to have bm beat,
but they switched to electric like a bunch of mouse fucking
pussies. but i digress. so what i did was carry 10 lit lamps
across my back for around half an hour, walking very slowly
from center camp towards the man. turns out this was a
special lighting, as they were taping it for a documentary,
and was the longest lamp route in the history of bm. plus, i
was last in line, i offically carried THE LONGEST lamp
lighting route. ever. out of anyone else. plus my butt is
gonna be on film. some people did carry through dust storms

hey, sf is the place to be for burners. its pretty much the
largest, closest city to black rock that would actually
house burner types (this means im excluding reno and vegas).
tons of de/recompression parties happen in the city as well
as looots of craigslist postings for bm-related items
(tents, domes, shitty bikes [because once a bike is used on
the playa, it is in nowhere near suitable condition for city
use], costumes, led things, etc).

i'm quite possibly moving up there in the coming couple
months - know anyone who is looking to share some housing?

well I only have one friend that actually lives within the
city itself... and he's paying $1,600 for a studio apartment
(yikes!). It's expensive as shit to live there.

If I can scrounge up enough players willing to cross state
lines next year, burning man sounds like it would be a
completely awesome time.
