i was wondering.. i read an interview some time ago and
there was that dude i can't remember the name who said that
he conceptualizes the work of an album before making music.
are you doing the same and if so - how? i remember i did
conceptualize some of the things i did and it was great
because i did finish them but now i just fuck around with
sound until i am entertained. i can't focus on something but
my own mood. and that makes things always change, and never
ends.

Conceptualizing things is fun and interesting, but if you're
doing that instead of being into the music itself, you won't
be good at what you're doing, or at least be happy with it.
I think there's gotta be a link that connects something from
you to your music that ties in with whatever concept you
wanna have surround it.

Born in this world
You got to suffer
Everything changes
You got no soul

a link you say.. could you explain how do you conceptualize
making it a funny and interesting thing to do..
methodically? i used to imagine a certain situation and
translate it in music but i can't restrict my experiences
anymore and say 'i want to make a track about that thing i
saw'. it's more a flow that i get from experiences in
general, not the static picture of a day.

a link, meaning something you hold to yourself that you can
only feel, that can be hard to explain with words or
gesturess, something you feel will last more than a split
second in thought, something you can look back on and say, i
remember that period in time because of that feeling i had.
That's the link, the feeling for it. I think you have to tap
into life beyond this day to day reality. You have to i
guess fall in love with something. You have to be able to
stare into the sky and truthfully ask yourself, am i sending
a message? Am i reaching anyplace further in myself than i
have yet gone? You have to expand your mind at all costs,
see what you find. If you don't find anything, it's ok, it's
just the way it went.

Also don't be afraid to go beyond yourself. Get away from
what you think to be your way of doing something. Record
some wierd stuff into your computer or something. Dont just
use things off of a computer. Get sounds from anywhere. Use
outside instruments, hardware, something you've had for a
while that comforts you when you're near it, an old T.V.,
something that gives off it's own vibe for you to interpret.
Too many people trying to make "their own sound, style, way
of doing things" In the end, it either sounds god or it
doesn't.

You have to i guess fall in love with something.

doh, exactly what i suspected. i've been falling in love so
many times with so many things that you couldn't imagine but
lately i became a bit more balanced with real life n stuff..
perhaps that's killing the spirit you talk about. i'll try
that way, thanks for your posts.

i know what you mean about real life/balance. just let it
come to you, it will, be open to whatever it is.

both approaches are valid innit? sometimes it helps to have
an idea or concept ahead of time, and more or less follow
it. other times you get more interesting results letting
the machine and chance collaborate with you just using
different processing & fx. it seems like part of refinement
is finding the right balance, and figuring out how to use
all your approaches together, hopefully making the music the
most balanced and also most dynamic.
