I am starting to read about the ideas alternative to the
main ones Al Gore is pushing. I was wondering if XLT could
have a heated debate on it.

Is it man made ? Or is that a lie to push the carbon taxes
?
Is it the sun heating up ?

I doubt mankind is organised enough to construct a
conspiracy that massive.

basically, scientists are 99% sure man made global warming
is happening. but nobody really knows what the long term
effects are going to be.

You Al Gore worshipping zombies!

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human
release of carbon dioxide is causing or will, in the
foreseeable, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's
atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate.

we by our very nature are a time bomb, we breathe out CO2 at
about 400kg a year, times that by 6.6 billion and you get a
fuck load of CO2.

I have had it up to here with the greenwash the UK
government is spinning, getting more taxes out of us for
things that will have little to no effect on global warming.
Climates fluctuate naturally, from the sub-mediterranean
temperatures of the middle ages to the 'big freeze'
supposedly on its way a few decades back. And at last it
seems people are wising up to the utter tripe they've been
fed about how their cars are the worst things on the earth,
cows produce more pollutants than cars in any given year

If the great storm of 1708 happened tomorrow we would
automatically blame it on climate change/global warming.
This was a natural event, we do get freak weather events
like the floods in the UK last summer which at first
everyone blamed on global warming but later was revealed as
a natural unstoppable occurence.

IMO Al Gore is one of the biggest tossers to ever be born to
this Earth, pushing unproven, unfounded and unresearched
views onto us in his film. Most of the stuff in that film is
bollocks and I think we know it.

There was a survey conducted by the UN's climate
change/global warming panel, investigating the effect on sea
levels if the ice sheets melted due to global warming, they
found that the sea could rise by a minimum of -0.02 metres
to a max of 0.09 metres. In other words, the melting of the
ice sheets could, conceivably cause global sea levels to
fall, contrary to the '5 metre' sea rise predicted by the
governments doom-mongers (don't ask me on the physics of the
sea level falling, I read it in a book somewhere which
didn't explain it) to make us pay even more tax because we
will be scared that we will get flooded. If regular people
took time to research exactly what is going on in the world
maybe we would all finally see we have been taken in by one
big lie

WWF, Greenpeace, David Cameron, the lot of them are all
complicit in the perpetuation (is that a word?) of the crap
we are fed about how we all must stop using evil, dirty
bastard cars of the devil, install a wind farm on every
house in the UK and then immediately shout down anyone who
dares to question the facts. The simple fact is, most
'climate change sceptics' as you put it use exactly the same
facts that WWF et al use to show it is happening. It's all
about the misinterpretation of data, and the fact that the
green lobby have got it so badly wrong. We badly need to
invest in nuclear power, as it is clean (ish) and sure you
may say decommisioning it is a handful but its the only
realistic option we have. Wind power is seriously flawed. It
doesn't work when its not windy, or when its too windy. The
amount of concrete involved in keeping them from toppling
over is astronomical. They are about 3 times as expensive
per kW than any other form of power. And these proposed
'eco-towns' are the worst of all. Building houses on
greenbelt land will destroy vast swathes of wildlife, if the
green lobby were that serious about eco towns they would
work to turn existing towns into 'eco towns' not that that
is ever possible because getting a 'carbon neutral' (my
least favourite phrase, alongside 'carbon offset') town is
almost physically impossible

and anyone who says 'we can't use nuclear, think of
Chernobyl' is an arse. Chernobyl was a shoddily built
Russian reactor with sub-par safety procedures. As far as I
know there hasn't been a single nuclear reactor accident in
the UK since the 50's and that shows just how safe they are
nowadays

the carbon we keep putting out isnt being absorbed and
converted to oxygen as much because of the rampant
deforestation occuring, which in turn puts out even more
carbon from the slash and burn clear cutting whatever... why
would anybody even for one second think it isnt caused by
mankind?

maybe nuclear power is a good idea, but i do think global
warming is real. the vast majority of scientists would
agree. we just don't know how much of an impact it's going
to have. this unknown factor makes it all the more important
to cut carbon emissions. you can argue that there are
lobbies who want tax increases and are using climate change
as an excuse to get this money, but by the same token there
are people in the oil industry pushing the opposite view for
their own ends. so at the end of the day, you just have to
look at the figures, and the world has been warming up at
the same rate as human co2 emissions have been increasing.
it's too much of a coincidence.
