thats more because you're actively thinking rather than
being inspired by something which cannot be explained with
words.
an idea, concept or emotion will never be reducable to mere
language, unless you are seductive and can draw people into
your frame of mind with words, but then it would be a lot
better to draw them in with your music.

i may be off the hook when it came to this property crap,
but i do know one thing about music making, and that is when
you have an emotion, and thoughts with it, an internalized
vision, and you are able to fulfill that vision physically
with sound, well there's nothing better.

my advice? get inspired, get internalized.

OK so yea you have the fundamental properties of music. The
basic theory. But with noise, glitch, abstract music etc.
you have a different subset of principals, standards &
forms. We haven't defined most of it yet, it all kind of
exists in passion, intuition, somewhere in the ether i
guess. Those principals behave based on their relationship
to the rules of traditional music. How much do
they bend them, how much do they try to retain them.

It is relevant, imo.

However abstract the music, it's still about pitch,
loudness, duration and timbre, just like painting is about
colour, intensity, texture and placement (or something to
that effect, I'm a lousy painter).

MELODY AND RHYTHM ARE FUCKING NOT THE SAME THING!!!!!!!!

a shape can have a color, and something with color can have
shape, but THIS DOES NOT MAKE SHAPE AND COLOR THE SAME
THING!!!!!

Four basic properties of music? I don't believe in that
shit, yo. It's reductionism.

Which is why pitch and duration make more sense than melody
and rhythm, you dolt.

also, just because music is abstract or weird doesn't exempt
it. microtonal music still has pitch, it just isn't within
the standard division of notes. glitch has rhythm, it just
its very strangely arranged.

this thread fucking hurts my brain. god forbid anyone with
any formal training in music see this and see "idm" for what
it is: a bunch of clueless nerds trying to make music that
is "complicated" without having any idea of what complicated
music is.

pitch and duration are in reference to a single note whereas
melody and rhythm refer to the pitch and duration of
multiple notes.

a measure of music will have a melody but not a singular
pitch (usually).

also, why are you calling me a dolt? we seem to be on the
same side here.

"god forbid anyone with any formal training in music"

Sir, these people have their own delusions and close-minded
limitations, just like anybody else. Not all of them,
obviously; some are real cute. And it is possible to be
fairly rubbish at quantifying music in words and still good
at making/playing it. Some of the worst music I've ever
heard is vomited up by some of the most eloquent of
individuals.

I guess that goes into conceptual approaches vs other
approaches, or some stuff. Anyway, you've created some good
reading pal, I'll stop embarrassing myself.
