so rigid grooveless beats overlain with tired dsp wankery is what counts for progressive nowadays?
altho i'll admit the bass on the "dubstep" track was pretty satisfying (got out of bed just to hook the laptop up to proper speakers), the rest just leaves me wanting something that i can actually discern some kind of musicality from.

No, but these tracks are neither of those things. If the tracks are too complex for you, maybe you should try something else, like the new Beck record, I hear it's quite nice.

It's a shame this isn't a little bit more "top secret" then it would never have made it into my ears. Looks like I will be enjoying regression...

just because you've got a bunch of weird sounds floating around that are so fractured they dont actually make some kind of melody or rhythm doesn't make it "complex" or "forward thinking." actually i think it's this kind of "progressive" music which has lead to music in the electronic avant garde to be so fucking boring lately.

Hello,
Like I said I'm sorry you didn't like it. You can in theory degrade any type of music like the way you did, that doesn't mean people can't get more out of it if so inclined.
There's always several ways to perceive music.

"that doesn't mean people can't get more out of it if so inclined."
i don't know where it was that i implied that i wanted to actively prevent other people from listening to this, however wankified i may find it.
"There's always several ways to perceive music."
really? i generally perceive it as sound. perhaps your are synesthetic?

What is IDM if it's not wankified? Do you mean to say that just because it sounds a bit random on the surface with no standard form, it's wank?
You don't hear any quality whatsoever or any ideas in these tracks you mean?

no, i'm saying it's wank because it sounds like you're just jerking off so hard over the crazy, abstract sounds you can make with seventeen dsps that you're forgetting music is meant to be enjoyed and not contemplated.
maybe you could pass this off as sound art or something, but it ranks up there with serial music and abstract expressionism in terms of art that doesn't serve much of a purpose other than to be incomprehensible.

actually, i'm gonna go off on a little rant here, in relation to some discussion i have been having with some real life friends of mine.
most of us are of the opinion that art (that is, music, sculpture, painting, photo, etc) generally has two aims: one is to express the feelings of the artist himself, with no regards to anyone else. the other is to be audience pleasing. obviously, there will always be people working in either fringe end of this continuum, but if you take the mean, it appears that the art which is on the "cutting edge" if you will is continuously oscillating between the two extremes.
in my opinion music reached the pinnacle of the self-indulgent end around 2000-2001 with the release of albums like confield, drukqs, kid a, lateralus.... there's plenty more out there, but i think these do a pretty decent job of painting a broad stroke. since then, things have been pulling more and more towards appealing to the audience, and bringing others back into the art. this can be seen with the recent surge of much more dance oriented music in electronic as well as sculptures and art installations which actually require the audience's participation to even exist (anish kapoor's recent works are an amazing example of this - see his exhibit for free on thursday evenings at the boston ica).
what im trying to say here is that the age of "you just don't get it" music is fizzling away - with the broad access to professional grade computer software nowadays, anyone can make nearly any sound they choose, so something that's just strange doesn't cut it anymore. now, please, let's concentrate on making music sound good.

You just made an excellent point so I had to reply.
Maybe this music is self indulgent, but I can assure you it was in no way intended to just be wank and strange for the hell of it. (tracks 1 and 3 specifically)
It was meant to be futuristic, alien and as such a bit weird too.
And also the difference between wanking off your equipment to make cool sounds, and not wanking off to make cool sounds is a thin one.
I can understand how someone can say what you're saying, but I do care about this music beyond just being wank, and yeah it wasn't the response I was hoping for.
And yeah, this was meant to be a prank, but I couldn't stop myself so now I'm gonna get beat up for it.
I guess I picked the wrong tracks for teh prank.

Your opening post was a bit wanky and three of the tracks I thought were a bit shit but I actually like track 2 apart from the pitched up vocals...they would have been better at a normal pitch with heaps of reverb.

"This is among the best, most progressive music you will hear
all year" I knew I shouldn't have download it. It's pseudo futuristic in a 90's sense. 'Abstract beats' etc. hopefully aren't the future.
