RIP the CD single

Woolworths to stop selling CD singles due to digital
downloads dominating sales.

clicky

I'm sure a lot of other big retail stores will follow suit.
My worry is, will the same thing eventually happen to CD
albums? I mean, I know it will eventually, but I didn't
expect CD singles to be phased out quite so soon.. it is
both a blessing as it is a nice kick up the ass for greedy
record labels and digital sales will give far more to the
artists. On the other hand, if CD does eventually die as the
format of choice for music, you can also say goodbye to
album artwork and uncompressed audio.

Opinions?

flac ftw
digital ftw, make a nice picture and scan it and combine it
with the download, don't be confined to a small booklet

It leads to further questions. Will artists just stop making
albums entirely and instead release singles "episodically"
just like video games such as half life work? Afterall, they
can get the music out there much faster now if there is no
need for physical manufacturing. Of course, it runs the risk
that if one single track isn't very good, it is harder to
sell future tracks. Interesting times ahead...

2000/2001ish

I used to love getting CD Singles and still own tons of
them.

That'll probably be the case, I imagine, and I don't
particularly see it as a bad thing: it'll mean bands will
feel less obliged to create 'filler' content.

And, at the same time, the "concept" of an album will never
die - there are some collections of music that are too
cohesive to be split up, and I think, if what you're
suggesting happens, these will be the albums of the future.

Funnily enough though I go into music stores and I usually
see/buy more 7"s than CD singles!

It was inevitable that this would happen to singles and it
makes a lot of sense. Like PORICK says, some artists will
always work with the idea of a Long Player in their mind, it
allows great things to be done. I doubt that the ability to
purchase music in some kind of physical format will ever di

The last great CD single was The Orb's 40 minute long "The
Blue Room". I miss the days of a CD single with 10 remixes
by no-mark names, as 010101 says, they died with the 3 track
/ under 40 minute rule. They were greatly abused when they'd
release up to 4 CDs of the same single in order to get the
hardcore fans to buy the same thing over and over for the
odd crappy b-side in order to get the thing in the charts at
all.

I really have the urge to listen to the Blue Room now.

Woolworth's, I had to take back once my copy of Run DMC /
Aerosmith's "Walk this way" 7" as it had scratches on it and
the store bloke moaned that there were fingerprints on it
and I moaned that I had to bring it back in the first
fucking place because it was scratched.

To me the ritual of putting on the vinyl or CD, going
through the booklet and having the cover-art far outweighs
the so-called benefits of the digital formats. All benefits
except for the fact that the digital formats have a smaller
environmental impact, that is.

Somehow, I think the lack of a ritual has turned music more
and more into background-music; you put it on when you're
doing something else. It's playing while you're reading,
making dinner, etc. Maybe the TV is on. You don't have to
pay attention, and the only people who "connect" with
the music they listen to are fragile teenagers.

Actually listening to the music is relegated to rare
romantic moments with a girl or other "special occasions."
Of course it makes those moments more special (I was tempted
to use the word poignant here for some reason, but I am
unsure if it is the proper word), but still...

Everyone seems to have musical ADHD: They're constantly
switching songs, artists, styles, etc, all over the place
(and even then, it doesn't become an "eclectic" experience
since no-one's listening to it anyway). Sometimes, they
can't even listen to a single song all the way through.

singles can. A lot of people want physical products, full

I love every aspect of owning a cd, since I'm a bit too
young (and poor) to be really hip and collect vinyls

come to think of it cd e.p.'s and 3'' have always been my
favorite gimmicks

I don't think the world is ready for a grand-scale format
change yet

Love singles, especially those before the '3 song rule'.
Don't really buy new singles but prefer hunting for
early/mid 90's singles/EPs at bootsales and CD fairs and
stuff. Only bought a few vinyls, but have stacks of CDs
bought from bootsales and CD fairs and the like. I'm not all
into downloading stuff, I'm one of those people who prefers
actually having a CD single/album

I AM GOING TO MAKE A HUGE PREDICTION:

In the next year or so record labels are going to start
releasing entire back catalogues on DVD. In a vain attemp to
get the last Audio sales.

It will be cool to have the entire back catalouge of someone
like The Beatles on one disk but it will herald the end of
hard media.

you read it here first!

I used to collect the depeche mode CD/LCD & XLCD CD singles,
but since they started overcompress them in 98' I stopped
buying them and nowadays I only buy the 12"s with any good
mixes on them...

I used to like the US/Japanese versions of CD-singles (Maxi
CD singles) they typically contained all versions of a track
on a single CD - in europe they spread them on 2 or 3
CDs...

(you can't really collect DM CD-singles anyway if you want
all versions as I did before - now most versions only end up
on promos which aren't really for sale anyway... only on
eBay for 90$)

after radioheads contract ended with emi, they (the record
company, not radiohead) released radiohead's 6 albums and
live ep in a box set. reason i bring this up was because
there was also a limited edition usb with WAVs.

Not just very good, but probably the finest ever. They are
to electro what Trax is to house.

But still, that compilation annoys me, simply because its
CDR and the files are all MP3. For £70 (which is how much I
believe it was selling for on boomkat), we should have a
proper cd pressing at least. Or even DVD's with all the
files as WAV. Shit, for that price, we should have a 25 disc
boxset :D

"The CD single died when the 3 song rule came in

yeah, I noticed that too. CD singles have seem to be
skimping on the quantity of material over the years. I
remember buying Violator-era Depeche Mode singles and
getting 4 to 6 remixes plus a non-album track (or two).
