is counter culture counterproductive to trying to change the world? i'm beginning to think it is. i mean, for a start, if you want people to take you seriously, you have to dress smart and wash.
discuss.
a friend of mine went to an anarchist bookfair a while back, and unsuprisingly, he said it was a shambles, that no one really knew what was going on, or what the point really was. not really going rock the foundations now, is it? in town at the weekends theres always animal rights protesters on a stall, and half of me thinks i want to go and check it out and support a good cause and then half of me thinks 'you look like rejects from the raggy dolls, and you're going to waste my time'
i read this, and it got me thinking. some of it is a bit iffy, but some good points are made;
Rebellion is a very good way of setting yourself apart from the masses, whether it's by being cooler or morally superior or just better informed than other people. It's a search for prestige in the most basic sense…. You can see the almost unassailable sense of superiority that's associated with the vegan, organic-vegetable-shopping, back-to-the-land, Guatemala-handcraft-wearing, anti-globalization activists. They clearly think that they're better than the people who do not share their system of values. So, because other people don't like being characterized as brainwashed cogs, they wind up promoting competitive consumption.."

I mean if it was an arachnist bookfair ran by spiders it would be good. Especially if one of the books was called
"Anarchist arachnids depose the British government."

well if you actually want to be an activist and have people listen to you, yea you have to be on and know what you are talking about. I mean, if you are lobbying for anarchy you could get away w piercings, tattoos and what not. our society is liberal enough now for those kind of goings on. you can dress business-rebel.
but if you are just gonna share this shit in a coffee house with your peers than it doesn't really matter, although they probably want you to be showered also.

see that part in your avatar getting down toward the bottom.
arachnids like to take it there, sometimes in the shower. and that thong would be way too thick for them they need to see the rim.

This thread is a lil messy. I'm not sure what point to make here. But I hate this shit in the UK. I swear that 90% of people dont have thier own ideas on a subject but rather associate themselves with opinions that make them seem smarter/fashionably different. It's all fucking image and no discussion. People go on about the UK government being shit, and i always ask them if theres that many places that are so much better. Their answer is rubbish cos they really dont know anything about the subject, but it's just cool to hate the government cos it's the only thing that turns them from middleclass bedroom masturbator to anti establishment mega rebel. I dunno, i'm just cross again

Many right-wing parties are populist parties, so they're just trying to make it seem like everyone agrees with them. They do this by pretending they have the core values, and by hypnosis (saying stuff no-one can disagree with).

Noseburger is correct. The value system is the problem - forcing everybody to fit into a model. Destroying the value system and replacing it with another value system sends you back to square one. What's the end result? One group has got their way over another group and is now in a position to sieze power and manipulate, usually at the expense of innocent people's lives - nothing profound has changed at the end of it. Soon more anarchists will arise to replace the anarchists who have become the norm. It's just silly little people, with silly little lives trying to exercise their self-importance - in reality they're no more important than the mosquitoes sucking their blood.
