maybe you should check out the Asian film Ping Pong
from 2002.. it has been described as the best film about
table tennis!

i think i will check that out. table tennis was just random
enough for my comment, but ive watched movies just to be
random too (usually because i plan to laugh at them in some
way)

Be sure that it's not Balls of Fury which is an
American film and not funny at all.

yea i haven't seen that one yet. Christopher Walken has
moved from being a parody of himself to a parody of the
parody he was 10 years ago.

how do you feel about that in terms of Japanese horror?

its tricky cause the fx/production are generally better in
the american remakes and thats part of what you are in it
for. but on the other hand the japanese just dont have a
conscience when it comes to horror and will do things on
screen that americans would just not ever have.

Allo! I can't help but chip in on this. The japs know how to
do it subtle, but most the time they really over indulge on
that. The US remakes aren't always terrible but they usually
are. They are just too dramatic and gothed up. You Americans
do it to yourselves too with that awful halloween remake
(booooooo). Fuck me i'm sick of Japanese stuff though. It's
hung up on overdramatics in another end of the extreme. The
Korean stuff is alright, but tends to do the same thing only
slicker.

well my incredibly limited knowledge on this subject says
the japanese movies are way better. but i'm only really
knowledgable on that one movie... you know...um...shit.
jennifer love hewett was in the american one. japanese one
was WAY better.

and Ichi the killer could never be remade here as good.

Don't pin halloween on us that was Rob Zombie alone. I'll
tell you though Devil's Rejects wasn't horrible, but it
wasn't outstanding either. House of 1000 corpses ... well
he did some cool natural born killers-esque cuts to old
horror movie footage and stuff like that but I dunno I had
problems w it.

The whole thing about the original Halloween that makes it
so good is you don't know why he's killing people.
Comes from a seemingly good home in a seemingly good
neighborhood. Yet he is the devil incarnate and there is
no explanation why (until the later movies when they had to
explain why he kept coming back to life so they turned him
into a demon or whatever.)

Asian horror has pacing and genuine chills. Something
American cinema seems to have forgotten about completely as
it now relies on over the top CGI and the horrendously
boring jump cut.

I agree. America did halloween, freddy ect. Excellent
classics. It's not America so much as it is a recent trend
in American horror where everything HAS to look like saw.
Lighting, effects, music, acting typically lacks subtlety.
The japs do all of that very well, but i've watched a fair
few for a few years and now i want to punch something
everytime someone spends 20 mins on the 'turning round
slowly to face the thing that made that weird noise' moment.
There are usually 10 of these moments, with over the
important "i'm so
scared/hurt/dishonoured/ashamed/dispairing" in between.
America just needs an audience that wont accept Saw then it
can evolve.
BTW Glasse i do blame Rob and not America.

I'm at a friend's place and they've got a projection screen
setup that's at least 100 inches, with a hockey game on. I
don't care much for hockey (it's alright), but the visceral
surround-sound and video setup makes it easily bearable.

What do you all think of hockey?
