1. 1972-78? Great period for classic rawk and metal - Sabbath, Zeppelin, not to mention SOUND OF 77 punque.
2. 1982-88? Electro, hip hop, thrash metal and hardcore, still some respectable post punk. Pop music becomes mostly unbearable.
3. 1992-98? Paging slipdrinkmats. Classic period for electronic music
4. 2000-2008? Great period for experimental music. Humanity's Complete Music Library comes online and you can download, listen to and remix anything anytime. A period of reflection and introspection.
rad smiles: 1979-1981 fuck yes, maybe one of the richest musical periods in the 20th century with post punk and new wave. Gary Numan alone elevates this period to epic win.

2008 coz when i see my parents records collection, everything seems mainstream back in the days while today we seems to have more choice. that said, mainstream was great in 72-78 (zepellin, bowie, t-rex).
