my spanish friend got into a situation at a hostel once. to say black in spanish is negro so in mexico they say coloured people, and they mean that out of respect, in a totally non-racist way. so there were these two huge black guys staying at the hostel and he was trying to find the right words in english (as he always does, his jokes take forever to tell) and one of the black guys got really mad, and insisted on being called black, thinking coloured was a very racist thing to say. thats the story. |

There was a black sitcom where the whole thing is about the white sister in law who has embraced urban culture, in a way that is a little too intense for her black sister and her friends. So at one part they are all playing a rap CD and the white girl is rapping along. Well it gets to a point in the lyrics where the rapper says niggah, and she just raps right along and then everything stops (I think they even used the record stopping sample in the background) and everyone gets all mad because she said it, even though she was rapping along to a CD that was playing that everyone was listening to. I guess the idea is that white people DO NOT and CANNOT say that word in any way, in any context, and under any circumstances. What do you people think about this? |

In all seriousness, we can't. It is a STRONG word, and one with too much history for it to be treated lightly. But it is silly that people can't judge the word according to context. It's not the word that's bad. It's the way it's said, who it is said to, and the motivation for saying it. If a 5 year old that dosn't even know what the word means sais it you can't be racially offended, the child isn't saying it to hurt someone. If a BNP style arsehole points at a black person and screams nigger it's different for reasons I don't even need to mention. CONTEXT. |

i agree with you, white people just can't tell unless there is enought level of confidence with the black people is talking with. it's a word that belongs to blacks, end of the story. there is no context, it always ends with some of the white abusing it or someone telling negro for something else than fun. plus, it's some kind of curse for a white, a taboo, that gives some kind of satisfaction when pronounced. |
