This thread is for pinpointing when a band/artist went from
good to suck.

Autechre: Anything before they made a crappy remix/mess out
of Killing Game by Skinny Puppy = good. Anything after =
suck

next....

completely disagree... but anyway...

im actually finding it really hard to think of an example...
i know when my music started to suck... and that was when i
went to university to do a degree in music... theory ruined
everything, theory is for idiots.

radiohead: between amnesiac and hail to the thief when they
stopped caring whether their music was innovative or
interesting.

System of a Down: right after they decided to put a slow
song on their first album. It was the top of the slope. A
parabolical one (assuming a in a*x^2 is negative)

to be honest, i don't know it, although i have just started
a (completely bs) class on the beatles, which encompases
more than just their studio recordings and singles, so i
have no doubt i will be exposed to mccartney's later works
in the coming weeks.

I only know it because you sent it to me and whilst it
intrigued me I can't seperate "The Music of Paul McCartney"
from "The burst mattress fanny face of Paul McCartney", that
and that a friend of mine from school who genuinley liked
Wings more than The Beatles (a la Alan Partrdige) both drove
me to a nervous breakdown and married my ex-girlfriend.

I fucking hate Paul McFuckingCartney.

Sorry for the life story.

i agree on the radiohead comment (definitely not marlowes).
i still dont mind them after amnesiac, they did lose a
certain quality.. or something.
there have been a fair few albums by luke vibert that really
haven't done a whole lot for me. though i guess he still has
his moments..

BOC - When they finally came out of the hippy closet.

I just got the new Mike Oldfield album, which is predictably
atrocious. I liked the first four - what happened? Seems
like once his panic attacks and crippling depression piddled
away his ability to make music that isn't so safe it's
sickening pissed into the void too.

I agree that autechre mix of killing game isnt that great,
but they openly admitted it wasn't their favorite track so
they should have done something else.

I would like to hear ae remix some of the noise beat stuff
on VivisectVI that might be more up their alley.

That remix album came out in 98 though, so you think LP5 was
the last good thing they did?

Speaking of Skinny Puppy though The Process was ok
but they never really got back in touch with what made them
so good before that, even after a 10 yr hiatus. The new
stuff has tracks/parts here or there but, are they really
just making sure they have a nest egg for retirement?

I usually call albums like that Metallica Black or The
Godfather III

I think he means that when you learn theory it takes the
happy accidents occur less often, or, it just generally
makes it less fun overall.

agree completely, but i do think in rainbows is an
improvement/step back in the right direction. radiohead to
me is a hill with a giant cliff. everything before ok
computer is the cliff, ok computer is the cliff, kid a
amnesiac are the back end of the cliff and then your heading
back down the hill.

i'd like to mix it up and say the simpsons went wrong during
season 8. although a very strong season overall you could
see it deteriorating in certain episodes (i.e. homer's
phobia)

a lot of people say the simpsons sucked after maude died,
but i think it's way before that.

Skinny Puppy took a very different path once they parted
company with Dave Ogilvie, I wasn't keen on The Process or
Mythmaker but I really liked Greater Wrong of the Right.

it's always been going more wrong with every day that
passes.
there are however, occasional golden moments of progress
that keep us listening.
maybe it went wrong when edison or whoever it was started
recording sound. or when hmv or whoever first sold those
recordings.
it goes more wrong with every technological advancement, but
with each technological advancement there is a brief glimpse
of the pinnacle of achievement (in one respect at least)
when internet/laptops/email/mp3's became proper everywhere?
nowhere near as many good live drummers or bass players as
there were in the 70's
when digital synths exploded after analog?
when the criminal justice act came in and when the
congestion charge came in
when everyone stopped publically celebrating the phases of
the sun and moon and tides and seasons
?

just after jungle became drum and bass?
or just after hardcore uk hip hop became hardcore
breakbeat?
computer screens?
when people strayed away from weed and mushrooms and acid in
favor of E and coke
when ford brought out the scorpio
if someone would make up a name for these years, the "00's"
and the "10's" or "teens"things would get better, as it is
we will have to wait ages till we see a repeat of last
century's "roaring 20's", westerners have no era to identify
with at the moment apart from negativity

Black music, while having some high points since the 80's
has gone to shit since the 70's. Yes, there was Detroit
techno, some good rap, thriller, but none of these things
can compare to the sublime soul music from the 70's back.

Na I think radiohead took a step forward by taking a step
back with in rainbows. ok computer and even the bends had
some solid song writing on them, poppy and alterna-brit pop
as they were.

Then from kid a up to hail to the theif the song writing had
to share the spotlight with their new focus of experimental
sounds, fx, programming & electronics. The song writing
became more avant garde too (which pissed off a lot of their
blur loving brit pop fans) and they started blending weird
styles, and just basically got more experimental.

That stuff is great and they are about as revolutionary as
the beatles for doing it BUT I do not think they are as good
at doing the experimental and electronic stuff as someone
who has been doing it their entire career. Those albums
always kinda felt like they were trying it out. I
don't know if that makes sense or not.

I do, however think they are very good at writing strikingly
beautiful, sometimes melancholy sometimes poppy or punky
rock music, and when the experimental/electronic elements
are just peppered in and the ratios are right the music is
certainly their strongest...

IMO
