"Lucked out"

What does the phrase "lucked out" mean to you? To me, it
meant nothing, and isn't a phrase I'd come across people
using.. But my friend put it to me another way:

"I was playing cards, it was my turn to play, I lucked out"

Was I lucky or unlucky?

It's by no means a phrase I'd employ, sounds ghastly. I'm
assuming (which, as we know, makes an Ass of U and Ming)
that it means "unlucky", my luck was out, as opposed to my
luck was in, which clearly means "lucky"

I was playing cards, it was my turn to play, I was deeply
aggreived to find myself in possession of a very weak hand,
so I upturned the table and left.

Though thinking about it now it could mean lucky.

In summary: Sorry, I'm not sure. My gut (and by god is it in
a bad state) says "Unlucky". My brain when it adopts an
American accent says "It's lucky, you schmuck".

it means lucky.

It means you experienced bad luck except in US America where
it means you experienced good luck--well, in books /
articles written by Americans and featuring the phrase it's
meant that.

in canada, it means lucky.

Yeah, there's a UK/US difference that's probably
attributable to the American people's general tendency to
not understand irony.

"I couldn't care less" or

"I could care less"

either way.....

Be careful because defensive Americans will justify that on
pedantically literal terms completely perverse to the
figurative meaning of it.

lucked out means you ran out of luck, hence 'lucked, out'

offline PORICK from fucking IRELAND on 2008-04-08 09:08 [#02192359]

yes

it's this UK/American difference that fascinates me - I
can't imagine how it could naturally mean "lucky" to
someone... It sounds too much like "out of luck" to me to
mean that.. And anyhow, "out" usually carries negative
connotations ("the in crowd", "en vogue", "out of fashion",
etc etc)

Well this is a country where some states are perilously
close to teaching Creationism as standard to their children.

when you hit jackpot on a bandit it 'pays out' = 'payed out'
= 'lucked out' maybe?

you're missing the context in which this phrase would be
used in the united states. generally, if you were in a
situation in which you expected something bad to happen to
you, but the actual result was favorable, then you "lucked
out."

"i was playing cards, and was dealt a very weak hand. but i
lucked out; my hand still beat the others."

what plaidzebra said.

it's like getting out of what would normally have
been a bad situation due to luck.

more meaningless ambiguity and a prime example of the
increasingly negative bastardisation of language. i would've
guessed wrongly. if it was spoken word u may have been able
to pick up on the meaning because of the sound, if it was
written word it needs minimum an "and" or a "but" at least
to give u more chance than flipping a coin.

'Lucked Out' means to have got through a situation because
of luck.

"'Things were looking really shit for a moment then but I
LUCKED OUT on the river. Now I'm going to have sex with a
really fat prostitute'. Said Gaundi as he scratched his
scrotum, sniffed his fingers then collected his chips." -
From Mahatmas' Hold 'Em Adventures by Barbara Cartland

hehe, from what i've read just now on a few other sites, it
really is regional and entirely based on circumstance:
"lucked out" can mean either to have had great
fortune or to have run out of luck.

To me it means that the results you experienced from a
particular situation were due to luck, either good or bad,
rather than from your own actions.
