Well, I'm here at the moment. The inflation rate is 9,5% and
I can say that the prices have really gone up significantly
since I last was here December 2007. Actually, since
November, I think, the value of the krona against the euro
has fallen by 41%/ It's rising however and everybody is
expecting to see 100 krona to 1€ euro rate in 2 to 3
months. There were many reasons for this collapse I think.
Firstly, krona is greatly dependent on the USD, especially
now, when the Americans finished their second large aluminum
smelter on the East Coast. We all know that there is not
much trust in dollar nowadays.
Secondly, tough winter. Many construction works were stopped
by low temperatures (even -17 Celsius) and the unusualy
strong winds. I don't think Iceland was able to work of the
expected part of yearly GDP this winter.
Thirdly, overheating as mentioned before. Iceland is simply
unable to finish the investments done by domestic and
foreign parties. They would have to get some experienced
engineers from Germany or Denmark. However, Icelanders like
to do things their own way and most of foreigners I'm
expecting to see in the incoming months will still be Polish
and Baltic republics'citizens.

Well, this is basicly all I know. Nobody is panicking and
krona is steadily rising (buy as much as you can!!!). I
heard of bankers selling their expensive cars in a hurry,
because they couldn't afford the monthly payments of their
credits in EUR.

they brought this on themselves! i mean, investing in free
daily newspaper when there was already 3 newsagencies doing
it.

that is, except of course fréttablaðið (which is actualy
one of the 3 newsagencies) but that comes daily to every
home...

HAHA, good that nobody listenes to my advices. What a
weekend, I honestly have no idea how Iceland is going to
look after the winter. Good luck to you guys, it seems that
the young generation will have to experience hard work after
all.
