I'm becoming interested in mixing and matching music for
parties around town.

Anyone can recommend anything that is fairly user friendly,
and also free?

Or if not free, easy to crack?

Thank you and thank you.

Ableton Live?

i had a go with Ableton for the first time last night, i
couldn't get the tracks to stay in time for longer than 16
bars...

so i hit the bottle and gave up.

i will conquer that bitch this weekend though, a Surgeon mix
is my destiny.

DJ Software would be a stupid moniker for a DJ to have.

Haha. I actually am looking into "virtual DJ" right now and
its proving to be very easy. Hell, I'm picking this up
better than I did making music in FL. Ableton will be my
next shot.

in Ableton, you need to warp the tracks before they will mix
well.

in other words, you pre-pocess them - loadsa tutorials
online about warping

once you get your head around ableton the beatmatching is a
piece of cake (after about a year of consistent use i can
properly warp a track in a couple minutes).

the biggest tip i could give in that arena is to zoom in as
far as it will go, find the first beat, then zoom out, check
the beats to make sure they are somewhat in time, then find
a really distinct beat later in the track and zoom all the
way in again and match it to that track.

obv. electronic tracks are easier to match than ones played
live. start with some simple house tracks (or anything with
a steady thump thump thump) then work your way from there.

Is latency important, because I noticed while pressing play
on one track before making it fade in from the previous,
they are slightly off, even though when I click with my
mouse it seems on time. Perhaps I should speed up my
computer somehow before trying this?

you should check out Traktor, its not bad, i think it's made
by Native instruments, and its not so exspensive, but i'd
say its medium difficulty

Native Instruments is a really good company from my past
experience with Reaktor. So I might give this a shot as
well. I trust their stuff.

buy some turntables, there is no substitute for the real
thing if you want some real enjoyment from it.

I'm using Serato Scratch Live, it's given new life to my
decks, best thing since sliced bread IMO.

But when I'm not on the turntables I use Ableton.

are you using traktor/stanton scratch? I was gonna go with
traktor because I'm familiar with it but was convinced to go
with serato after seeing it in action.

****ABLETON USER HELP NEEDED!!****

i completed my first ever mix and the resulting file is
450mb!

that's freakin huge for 45 mins, so my questions are thus,
is that normal and if not how do you keep the file size
down?

should i just digout the old minidisc and record it or what?

for a wav that sounds about right, however, if you look in
your ableton folder, there's gonna be a wav for every single
tune you've imported, so if you notice you lost a bit of hd
space, you might wanna delete some of those.

this or should i just record it via another source?

you can just encode the rendered wav to mp3, keep that and
chuck the wav in the bin

I have the M44Gs and I love them!

I like to use 1.5g pressure and 2-antiskate for general bump
pressure up to 2.5g for scratching. Mine are mounted right
at the front of the headshell.
They look better without the needle protector though...take
that thing off!
