Autechre - Quaristice

I've been looking forward to hearing this album, and I
finally bought it today. After one listen through I must say
I am starting to get so sick of this group. Yes yes, I
realize Autechre is a group whose music usually rewards many
listens, but I've always found with their music that I'd see
something I liked on the first listen, even if that didn't
evolve into much more on further listens. This album just
left me bored to say the least.

To me it seems they've finally gotten their heads stuck so
far up their asses that they've forgotten how to make good
music. I hardly recall hearing any type of melody whatsoever
in the whole cd, and half the beats I found so monotonous
and boring. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's almost a
crime that these guys, who showed on albums like Incunabula,
Amber, Tri Repetae, Chastic Slide, and LP5 that they have
such huge melodic gifts, that they scrap melody for these
boring beats. It seems like such a waste.

your ears must be full of earwax. there are some really
obvious melodies on this album. lets take the first track,
for instance. really full of earwax...

It all sounded pretty bad to be honest. And since their
packaging has become as pretentious as their music I
wouldn't be able to tell you any of the track names.

what i don't get is what made you buy the album? surely
there's lots of music around you could spend your money on
more wisely..

There's the melodies, and then there's the beats.

What do you like best in general, beats or melodies?

I don't think it's the greatest thing either but I didn't
start a new thread about it when there are already plenty of
them.

i read in an spanish ae interview
that theres not melody at all
(appart from first and last ambient tunes, i guess...)
that its all about rythm,
and how your brain is looking for melodies
amongst those rythms...

i think ae got so good at making melody it's made them
boring
they can write instant recognisable melodies that sound like
they have always been here
(quaristice, like untilted, focusses more on beats of
course)

Well, it could have been better, but I still like it. I'm
glad they gave us quantity though, leaves room for more
variety.

in my opinion though

Untilted>Quaristice

Yeah, guess I should've ignored the fact that I like most of
what they've released, and that everything I've read made it
sound like something I would like. I should've just assumed
it sucked!

everything I have (2 LP's from warpmart with bent covers and
the LTD version)

I'm not mad on Quaristice, but its lack of focus on melody
isn't a problem for me. If you want melodic music, there's
plenty of it out there to cater for your needs. They're not
really about obvious melody any more, and that doesn't
bother me because their music is interesting for other
reasons. Tracks don't need an obvious melody to be great.

the thing is there's surely been at least a 100 releases you
would probably like better, but you probably didn't buy all
100. it's a wise thing to use sites like bleep to preview
something you're about to buy i think. i mean, what's the
point in buying records you then don't like? seems like a
strange thing to do

Yeah I agree with that, but there are certain groups that I
will buy anything they release, even if I don't like it. I
kind of collect cds, and I'm a bit of a completist when it
comes to my favorite groups.

Quaristice is sex. I don't know why I ever spoke wrong of
her. It's like Bitches Brew for the future.

it sounds great!
lots of different landscapes, long time for reflexion and
lovely destination (more for the girlfriend than for andorra
itself...)

maybe he bought iy he because he sees potential in autechre
and thought they might produce something more enjoyable than
what he has heard before. that probably means he has an open
mind.

if the originator of this thread said he loved the album
daresay nobody would be telling him not to post the thread
or be insulting him. why do people get upset when something
they enjoy gets criticised by another? how or why should
that effect your enjoyment of it? maybe because you're
insecurities lead you to identify your enjoyment of autechre
as a facet of your own personality and are therefore
protective of it. in which case the music has become a
philosophy, something to intellectualise about. then you
have bent and distorted the reality of whatever you're
listening to completely out of proportion, rendering your
opinion close minded and less than truthful.

its not necessarily because its a part of the personality
though.
if you listen to a song and someone says 'it sucks', it may
just be an initial emotional response.
at least for me i know that no one can take my enjoyment of
say bola - forcasa 3 away, even tho plenty have said it
sucked, and further said stuff like it sounded dated and
crappy, which sounds objective.

i can get a negative reaction towards it because of that.

and further if someone says something and you see the song
in a new light, maybe theres truth behind it that you didnt
notice until then?

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2008-03-24 20:51 [#02187954]

yeah, but what I wrote isn't aimed at you is it? it's aimed
at those who criticise something that they like because it
affronts them.

mr funkmaster bought it cos it was autechre´s,and he still
gives them the credit

also he said he is a completist

these both facts made him buy it eventhough he could forsee
that he might not like it very much

I understand that if this gets repeated in the future, he
will stop giving autechre such credit in the future

I myself loved it though

the first track would have been better without the beats,
you cant really hear the melodies at all
