Americans are crazy.

Bush just vetoed the "no more torture" bill.

So yay they can keep torturing!

"Torture is tools."

"What about human rights, Mr. President?"

"Human rights.. heh.. that's kind of vague, isn't it?"

that's like falling from a plane without a parachute and
worrying about the landing.

Europe is way smaller than America. You have much more
public transit. Americans live in their cars. Distribution
of products such as groceries are done via 18 wheelers
trucks. Thus affecting the price of everything while in a
recession. Id rather have a train in each town and shorter
distances to drive than cheaper gas and no trains no busses
and vast distances. Its not that great.

Americans live in their cars.

and i was thinking the usians drive big suv's because
they're thick. i guess it must be me who's thick. they
frigging live in their cars! especially now that they can't
afford to live in normal houses anymore...

Lovely pedantic trite joke.

Since when is America the SUV capital? SUV are made by
Porche, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Land Rover. Most people in
America own foreign cars and trucks. Cause, frankly,
Americans cars suck and we know it. So why don't you
petition your local car companies to stop making these
vehicles if they anger you so much?

all those foreign companies make SUV's, BECAUSE THE AMERICAN
MARKET GENERALLY WANTS INEFFICIENT LARGE VEHICLES

Your foreign language sites for these companies have these
vehicleslisted. So it doesn't seem to be solely the usa
fueling the need for these vehicles. They want to cater to
an international audience. You aren't going to guilt trip
people into doing the right thing. It has to happen from the
top. The people making the decisions. New energies, new
technologies,. Thats the only thing that has taken us out of
the smog filled Industrial Revolution

Our problem is that that the line between government and

lol
that's just nonsense. is that the american way of reasoning?
just because mcdonald's (or a european fast food thrash
restaurant - can't think of any atm) sells big macs doesn't
have to mean you have to eat them. come on. sure, the
government have to make regulations forcing the industry to
make healthier food, because well, the masses obviously
can't think for themselves. they're just brainless consumers
right?

and btw: sure suv's are sold all over the world. but still,
they're relatively far more popular in the us. i don't see
an argument here.

seriously though, i feel sorry for the americans. i read an
article last week where they gave a nice analogy for the
current economic developments in america (in this case, the
huge trade deficits) wrt the rising economies in asia.
it was a story about four people stranded on an island.
three asians and an american. in the old situation the
asians made long days producing food while the american
basically did nothing apart from making sure the asians kept
working.
after a long day working the american ate a large part of
the food, leaving the left-overs for the asians. for as long
the asians didn't know better, things worked out well and
there was a stable economy on the island. but after a while
the asians started to wonder why they would have to feed the
american. and that brings us to the current global
developments:the decoupling of the international economy from the amer...
again, i wish you the best. you're in for a hard time and
the worst has yet to come (and there's not a democrat
president who can do a damn thing about it)

Every decade since after ww2 has had some doomsday scenario
with magazines spewing fear over something taking us over.
Whether its the cold war, the Japs buying all our real
estate and taking over the economic world or the next ice
age. Now its global warming and China. So much wasted worry
over nothing. The scary stuff is the shit we can't predict.

If you offered any of those issues any kind of minimal
thought, you'd notice how the reason why they didn't
actually grow into disasters is that someone did
something
about it (not the future/current ones yet, but
people are doing something about those). It may not
have been you, but it may also just as well have been you.

So you would have to justify your idea that you can't do
anything about issues like these.

Sure, the sun exploding and gamma rays and whatnot, but do
you really believe you can't do anything about man-made
global warming? Do you really believe you can't do anything
about China?

Do you know what a vote is?

Do you know what action is?

Do you know what engagement is?

Do you know anything at all, or have you been shut up inside
your own sphere of "self-sufficience" so long that the light
outside keeps blinding you?

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2008-03-09 10:20 [#02183399]

Voting is important, but my point is these big problems are
often times chaotic systems that aren't in the control of a
handful of do gooders. The fickle fingers of fate are often
the only thing in control. In the early 90's we were scared
shitless of the Japanese. The result of that was not in the
control of anyone in America. We are worried about China
now. All these up and coming economies we are so afraid of
are also contributing to your other pet smug topic global
warming. Since they are like America in the early 20th
century. Focusing on unregulated manufacturing. So which one
do you want more? The demise of America or less green house
gasses?

Godel, I really hope it all works out for you. I know you
love to see America turn into the next Siberia. I am hoping
Obama is elected and makes America into what it was prior to
ww2. Insular. No foreign bases. Minimal foreign policy and
involvement. No policing of the world.

Also, Many scientists believe the earth goes through natural
warming and cooling patterns. Why did we choose to listen to
the group that thinks that warming is man made and not part
of the natural cyclical pattern of the earth temp?
