Hey,
I'm currently working on this live set, PACh ArcEL, with
heavy use of the Machinedrum along with microKorg and Alesis
Ion. I record the jams then edit and mix them together using
Ableton Live. (Yes, this was heavily influenced by seeing
Autechre on Monday :P) Tell me what you think of this
excerpt.
Thanks,
Future Image

well, It's made by someone who knows how to do it but -
"(Yes, this was heavily influenced by seeing Autechre on
Monday :P)" - and that's way to obvious... make it sound y o
u instead.

Yeah I know, half of the techniques used here are just Ae
rip offs, but I've kinda run out of stuff to rip off now
(heh) so I expect the next few additions to this project
will be more my stuff.

I found that really enjoyable. Sure, it sounds a bit like
Autechre, but I don't see what's so wrong with that when
loads of music sounds like other music out there (and
doesn't even do it well). Great sounds and beats.

guy tryin to name his tracks as autechre does, tryin to
sound like autechre does, and trying to copy autechre as
they are.

instead of :

doing something on its own.

Haha "PACh ArcEL" is actually a malformed version of the
phrase "Packshot Balance" - I keep a txt files full of
possible names and phrases for songs.

I have a PDA which has a Transcribe function that works very
badly. It's great for really screwing up words. I kept
writing in "Packshot Balance" and then the malformed version
of that, then the next version etc. until it displayed:

"PACh ArcEL"

The last thing I would try and do is to make the titles
sound Autechrean, that's not my style. I pick up phrases and
words from spelling mistakes, errors in software and things
people around me say, I don't go around naming them after
roundabouts or cities.

Perhaps I sound like Autechre because I use the Elektron
Machinedrum. That would mean that the Knife, Air, Venetian
Snares, Milanese, The Chemical Brothers all sound like
Autechre. The Alesis Ion and microKorg AFAIK Ae have never
used, so perhaps not.

I made another part last night and it's as far away from
Autechre as could be (while keeping the style IDM and at 171
BPM). Could almost be Tangerine Dream and Vangelis deciding
to do IDM together.

Just out of interest, would anyone pay money (around £5?)
for a CDr of the full album once it's finished?

...would it mean that? Then w h y on earth DOESN'T "the
Knife, Air, Venetian
Snares, Milanese, The Chemical Brothers" sound like ae at
all?
(I guess they want another sound)

you know, it doesn't matter what you use or h o w you've
made it
- if it sounds like ae it's still sounds like ae no matter
what....

(ae already explored weird titles and their form of elektron
weirdness,
now make your own explorations, retry if it just sounds like
ae.
But hey - I have no doubt over that it's a real challenge to

NOT sound like ae if you twiddle around on the mduw, those
sounds
are getting quickly worn out if not taken further)

"Just out of interest, would anyone pay money (around £5?)

of course! new, original and great music is always worth
supporting!
(btw, gack's music as jokiel & c-drive is worth supporting
too,
though it's not original at all - just extremely good and
full of charm....)

please don't compare yourself.

also, stop trying to dig out of the hole of autechre
comparisions. people don't think you sound like autechre
because you use the same equipment, they say it because you
do.

i think you're just a bit starstruck. imitation is the
highest form of flattery i guess.

i think this is its own song.. whether or not it sounds like
autechre is irrelevant really, its just sound that i like to
listen to

hmm those comparisons were the closest things to what I've
recorded but listening to them again today they aren't at
all really... I don't know what I sound like which is a
seriously good thing. I'm not trying to imitate anyone, sure
I'm influenced by different things and those influences take
form in different ways, but anyways. also listening again to
it, is the part I've posted really that much like Ae
anyway?

I never thought of Parcel Arch :P

I think the name thing is a hard one, because often this
music isn't 'about' anything, it's just organized sound, so
a literal name (or even a name at all) seems a bit pointless
and irrelevant. Then again, if you're going to invent words,
they can just end up sounding like Autechre attempts. :-)

Congrats on getting on the tribute album, btw!
Saw it in this thread.

tell ya what, if i had heard this sort of thing back in the
day when i was doing music, i would have shat my pants.

i think this style has finally clicked for me. its all about
loosening the hell up. the genre has seemed all but
suffocated in recent years.

autechres current direction seems to distance itself from
the electronic rut. maybe no one cares anymore, but thats
fine, nor do the artists!

Aww damn you Rob! I was saving that 'til it came out!!! :P

Definitely agree on the name front. You can start going into
the whole "what actually is music" with this though. I've
had a weekend of that.
