Ok. So it has been ages since Ive listened to any rock
music.
Battles kind of brought me back into that sound, looking
into there past I got into Don Caballero and the projects
that followed it (Coptic Light). I'm in love with the
playful complexity of the mathrock sound.

I've recently heard Foals and while the band sounds like it
could eventually not end up being some poppy shit. it still
is too poppy for me.

The Japanese band LITE has a few good tracks etc etc.

Anyone else digging this sound?

theyre a bit much for some and an acquired taste for the
rest :P

the Holy Fuck CD? i thought it was kinda really meh after
seeing them live which was good.

a band that fucks Hella in the butt: ZU.

Please tell me you've heard of 65daysofstatic.

It's basically math rock with idm elements. Excellent stuff.

Everybody with an interest in mathrock should get
'Spiderland' by Slint.

It's probably the most influential mathrock album released.
The whole mathrock genre has suffered because of this,
though, as a lot of bands try to sound like Slint. Still,
it's a great album. LAZY_info

So I listened to Lite last night........ ok, I might listen
to some more.

As a genre, is Mathrock purely instrumental?

nay, i would consider bands like q and not u to be part of
mathrock as well.

I'm not sure about Hella. Heavy yes. but it sounds like
shit.
I'm not that into the math metal. Dillinger Escape Plan
would be great without vocals...

I guess I'm looking for something cleaner and filled with
energy. not so much for the growing my hair out and gaining
a beer gut style of math music.

Will check out slint !

Given a rock band R having a possibly infinite number
of elements, a subset of which containing only guitarists.
Find an injective map f:R→N, where N is
the set of natural numbers. Is there a bijective map from
R to N? From R to R, where R is the set of
real numbers?

Hint: Consider the shredocity function s(g),
where gR is some guitarist. Can you
think of any rock bands having cardinality aleph-one?

Have you guys listened to The Panoply Academy? I picked up one of
their cds several years ago when I saw my friends' band open
for them.

It is pretty good. David Byrne meets Slint/Battles/that
kind of thing? if you will. Anyway I like that stuff but my
friends are all into it and introduced to me to Don Cab,
Forest for the Trees, Paul Newman, etc

Members of Harbor Gentleman do this now if anyone
is interested.

Haha I saw the singer from Foals, Yannis Philippakis walking
round Oxford today. He seemed quite shy, as soon as we made
any degree of eye contact he kinda started increasing pace
lol.

FOALS is one of the best things Ive added to the ipod
lately.

Its as energetic as Battles but has that Talking Heads, Fire
engines type sound that gives it the edge. Its like a second
favourite beer when you're used to large doses of Vodka and
Redbull or Rum and Coke.

Maths class would be nice if the singer didnt ruin the
sound.

im checking out foals right now, pretty cool so far, but the
new meshuggah has a lot of math in it. trying to follow
their rhythm timings is a chore. totally sick. highly
recommended.

wow, foals just keep getting better. im not sure i hear much
of a 'math rock' sound. but they sound great nonetheless.
def digging that talking heads type influence.

I'm certain this has been discussed to death before, but is
all music not math?

I'm hoping not to start a discussion. I'm just
saying it's sort of funny that the music lends itself to a
term such as "mathrock" which clearly makes sense in
context, but is really a bit redundant, no?

heh that's the thing though, a lot of math rock doesn't
actually use math technique in such a depth. 'tis odd.

Hold your Horse Is sounds "ok"

clean. manic. slightly technical
but the sound all together is still not very refined.
or at least not for my ears. I'm not against the Metal sound

but this composition is imo really irritating overall.

I will try again to hear hella.

yea, i need the antidote for that record. i have been
playing nothing but that at all. at first, a lot of it it
was way too poppy sounding for me, but i got over it and am
digging most of it. def has a lot of talking heads like
babaouo said, but i also hear some disco biscuits in there
in parts and def some don cab influenece in sound, not
structure

why? it's brilliant! the sax stabs are what make it, and
that weird multi-tracked sax freakout at the end should be
so much longer - perhaps lead into another song.

i'm just not big on the lyrics to that one.

I like the sax though. Foals is basically Microhouse styled
mathrock with that Talking heads thing.

I cant stop listening to Battles: DdiamondD, Dance and Tij
