The Mayas actually thought the world was going to end every 52 years... seeing it wasn't happening, they would sacrifice people to "thank" her god or whatever. Also, what's funny is the precision of the date, when you know the inexactitude of every calendar... you know the earth rotation around sun slightly decreases (0.53 second every century), and rotation around itself increases 2 milliseconds every century, because of moon and tides effects etc... We'll be dead soon enough, Earth is struck by objects about 100-meters in diameter every 1,000 to 5,000 years - that's nuclear bomb sized. Every 15,000-60,000 years an extinction-threatening object will hit us.
