i wonder if i was ever good at making music or if i just got
lucky a whole bunch and just ran w/ it? do u ever think
that? i have all this dope gear and its fun to make tracks
but when its over its like, that was terrible

You are your own worst critic, which is far better than when
an artist becomes obsessed by whatever they are working on
and can't step back and view their stuff from the
perspective of a first time listen.

Attempt a cover version just to see how someone else has
composed and then try a track in their style.

i would rather be honest with myself and say that i love
sound more than i like actual music, cause, tons of times
ill just bang a sound out a million times and smile really
big without ever really making a track, and, then ill feel
like i have to throw it in a track, and its like, well why
did i do that, now i am mad

well music - i love, but, i think im better at making
"events"?>???
rather than... scenes?

i always enjoy the music i make that i would never ever show
anyone way more than the music i do show people. i wonder if
that means anything?

it means that its coming from the heart and its what really
moves you - but what is it then when you begin to hate even
that? when you feel it during the process then you listen to
it and youre stunned that you would even make it

bother.

You should just do what you enjoy and make sounds without
feeling the need to arrange them into tracks that sounds
like stuff that's been done before.

i had the opposite experience. my music just kept getting
better and better. unfortunately i was the only one who
thought so.

i think you should try collaborating. you need to find a
music person who's good at the music, not so good at the
sound design and crunch. or just steal someone else's
music, and grind it down until it becomes unrecognizable.

if your field isn't delivering, plow it under i say. then
again, if you're having a good time, why complain?

in the interest of full disclosure, i'm not sure if anyone
has ever taken my advice.

imo following the old techniques that everyones created only
leads to repitition of old ideas..
create your own expression and then you will find the
passion again..
nobody really knows how to create music, its just a bunch of
people agreeing that a technique sounds good..

That's probably the consensus of a few other members too.
Most times it all starts with a sound or pattern. It's not
really music, more of something that makes you think "this
works, let's see what else works with this".

Oddly enough, when I first started making music, back when I
was total shit, my tracks sounded more like 'music' than
they do now.

My sound is getting more and more contrived, trying to fit
in sounds that work to me. Either my ears are maturing to my
own creative process or I'm just getting more and more weird
with what my ears deem acceptable material.

I suppose making an actual finished track rather than some
nice sounds does take quite a bit of discipline and effort,
even if it's all (normally) fun. Perhaps you need to take a
break until you're ready to delve into the more anal job of
forming and polishing a complete track. You can muck about
making sounds here and there until that moment comes.

Good luck. You're stuff is fine, everyone sometimes goes
through this self doubt business...
