haha, someone flamed another person for suggesting the money
might've been better spent as a donation to charity.

"Posted Tue Feb 5, 2008, 1:50 PM — By David

Wow...someone has a lot of cash, and needs to be donating it
to charity, not spending it on rediculous "entertainment"
systems."

"Posted Wed Feb 6, 2008, 5:05 PM — By Michael

@ David A man builds, a parasite asks 'Where's my share?'
Your comments just make you sound bitter that you don't have
that kind of money to spend. This is the spirit of
capitalism. I applaud Mr Kipnis."

He's right, of course - $6,000,000 is far more appropriately
spent watching Ratatouille by yourself in your sterile
little hall rather than helping others.

You are all jealus. Let him spend his money on this
'entertainment system'. I'm not provoked by it at all. A lot
of millionaires spend shitloads of money on far more idiotic
and useless things than this.

It's the symbolism of it, though - I wonder if he watches
Iraqi children being taunted while their fathers are being
tortured and humiliated on his huge screen ... I'll bet he
can really hear the screams well with his hundred
speakers.

I don't know.. to me it seems like the last guy is agreeing
with the first guy. You could be making the same point - it
is all so very confusing, but also a bit comforting.

The final paragraph was mine (the sarcastic one!) -
the one up from that was calling the initial poster bitter
(and probably a stinking lazy parasitic commie) because he
thought six mil' was just a tad decadent. I'm not sure where
your confuzzlement lies, otherwise I'd be more useful, soz.

shit happens you get an idea you have the money.,you do it..
no avoiding it...yeh and millions are still staving and
billions of animals tortured ...he probably needs that

Yeah, I got that.. it's just that the "this is the spirit of
capitalism" thing seems to me to be irony, especially when
answering what the first guy said.

hmm, I dono, it didn't sound ironic or sarcastic to me: the
spirit of capitalism being a MAN who has lots of money and
is justified in spending millions on a home theatre, and
anyone who dares criticises the moneyed man for any reason
is automatically classed a parasite / bitter lazy commie /
homosexual retard. . . similar to if anyone whispers
anything negative about Judaism or Israel, the Jewish
Defence League (or whatever they're called) immediately
label them an anti-Semite.

he's not an extravagant millionair, he's an audiophile
chasing his dream of the best possible home movie theatre,
it's great project

if his passion was helping starving people in africa the
world would have been better. if he'd been obliged to give
all his money to charity or the state, like communism, the
world wouldn't have been better because he wouldn't have
been motivated to make money

I wouldn't class him as an audiophile -- $6,000,000 of
equipment is not required to optimise the listening /
watching experience. He sounds like someone who threw money
at a lot of unnecessary extravagances, a whole lot of
money--a decadent amount of money on something which is
really quite trivial. . . a copy of Ratatouille and a
PlayStation3. It's a mockery.

I read something a while back about how the price of a thing
makes your expectations about it high, and then something
happens that makes you happy when you spend the money. It
was some neural/biochemical thing.

The guy's trying to start a business putting together these
kind of setups and this is a demo system. True its something
that he will enjoy but it is also an investment. The point
about donating to charity seems null in my opinion. If you
wanted to start a business and someone turned round and said
'That money would be better off going to charity' would you
give it away?

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2008-02-10 03:34 [#02173520]
Points: 24587 Status: Lurker | Followup to Indeksical: #02173458

I don't think I would start a business which led to a whole
group of middle-aged cunts with $6,000,000 of worthless
cinematic equipment whilst down the road there were
destitute families. In that case, I would probably either
change the business to one that was more socially
beneficial, or else . . . hmm I've forgotten the "or else"
cos I had to change a wet nappy and make a cup of tea
*scratches head* Sorry Sam--all I can say is that the "Or
else" led to one of the most brilliantly witty OR ELSEs
ever!
