wicked stuff. although in this case i think this is far too
much. i mean having like 30 high powered amplifiers around
you must create a massive amount of electric radiation and
is probably even hazardous. im sure that this guy glows when
you switch the light off.

also - imagine the hum of all those amps which obviously
must have some sort of transformators and posibly even fans.
and then the fans of the screen projector. and surely the
room is so sealed shut that when you put everything on it
must sound like during 2001 space odyssey.

besides - i don't think i could ever be happy about such
harware because i simply don't listen to the right music. i
mean all this gear and audiophilism has some sense when you
listen to classical stuff or jazz records that were recorded
directly to vinyl without any digital conversion. but
listening some autechre on this stuff would probably not
enhance your listening experience. probably it would lower
it because you would start to hear bad audio converters,
cheap chinese resistors in the machine drum, rob sneezing
that went through unshielded cables.

It's a waste of money. He should have saved money on
equipment and spent it on a consultant who knows what
they're doing.
There are a number of mistakes in what he has done, which
should be obvious to anyone as unskilled as a Sound On Sound
reader.

I would also like to use my standard audiophile attack
mechanism and mention "diminishing returns". Can the
difference between a 4mil and 6mil setup be perceived in a
double blind test?

Well the most obvious one to me is placing power amps in
front of subwoofers. Electronic circuits can pick up
vibrations. This is called microphony.
The subs will be blasting out massive sound pressure waves
at low frequency. These will be picked up by the power amps
by vibration of the wires, PCBs, etc.

The individual amplifiers inside the amps, be they FETs,
transistors, valves, etc are all supplied with a DC power
supply. In circuitry the DC supply is decoupled by inductors
and capacitors to eliminate AC components.
This makes the amplifer more stable and less likely to
suffer from distortion.
Since the subwoofer operates with low frequencies, when
these are picked up by the amp they are much harder to
filter out or decouple. This is because they are much closer
to DC (i.e. zero Hz) than higher frequencies of tweeters,
etc. Low frequency noise is a big problem in electronics
compared to higher frequencies.

By placing the amps so close and infront of the subs, he is
bound to get massive amounts of microphony, even if the amps
are on special absorbing feet.

The other problem is that the amps are infront of the
speakers! Does it sound like a good idea to block the path
of sound with objects?

Let's not mention the book shelves shall we?

The room looks like is has no acoustic treatment or design.
If you stuck that stuff in a big echo chamber would it sound
good? Room design is a huge part and to my (totally
untrained) eye, it looks like he hasn't had it specially
designed. (I've not read the text so maybe I'm wrong on this
one)

Finally, the biggest mistake is not having more room for
people. Films should be a social experience with friends. If
I had such a facility I would invite friends round and watch
a film with them, not just me and the her and a big empty
soulless room.

He spent so much on it, he couldn't afford to pay anyone to
design his home page.

Would you buy something from that?

i just realised that his wife will never really experience
the full surround thing because she's too short and the sofa
blocks the sound for her from the back

I just hope that the amps are intended to be hidden and this
is just to make a flashy photo.

Lets keep it in perspective chaps, given the current value
of the US dollar, this is less than £3,000,000.

I just watched a video of Woody Allen getting "drilled" by J
L Godard. They talk a little about MOVIES on the smaller
screen. LAZY_TITLE

Me?
I'd really like those speakers that look like brass horns.
Two of them, please!

Yeah, that's the style I'm talking about. It only makes
sense that music speakers should be shaped like horns. (?)
I really like these ones.

well he's experimenting. maybe when he figures out how to do
it right, it will only cost like $5million. Then anyone who
would have bought the system for $6million can now give
$1million to charity.
