onyx & cocktail are nice for maintence, tinkertool for some
costumizing

I use superduper for bootable back ups (fits me better than
timemachine)

tech tool pro and disk warrior might come in handy when/if
things start to behave badly/mess your stuff up.... (it's a
computer, after all)

pithhelmet(adblocker) and safariplus
(flashanimationcontroller) is a must for nice web-experience
(ad-block are of course available for firefox too, ff isn't
as maccy as safari... :) )

adium for instant messaging
appzapper for removing some software
audacity for sound editing
coconutbattery if you have a laptop and want to keep
track of your battery's health
istumbler, mostly again if you have a laptop, it lets
you see all the wireless networks in your range, how good
their reception it, whether they are password protected and
a whole bunch of other info
xact to convert flac to wav
unrarx for rar files and lots of other compression
formats not supported by the os x unarchiver
istat menus lets you view all sorts of system info
(cpu, hdd, memory, etc.) in your menu bar - has a tiny
footprint and is really customizable.

every one of these you can find in google for free

F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your
computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night
and like sunlight during the day.

didn't tested yet but it will soon

just downloaded this and it's wierd. There's a customizable
app like this that is made for people in special military
ops or something, it was posted a while ago in isome mac app
thread. I forget though.

what? weird, i'll check it out

If VLC has trouble when starting up (here it hang), you
have to delete VLCs preferences. There's a an app included
on the dmg, in the Goodies folder for this purpose ("Delete
VLC Preferences"). After running the app, VLC started up
just fine here.

talkin bout the Flux app, i just tried quitting it because i
didn't like how when i opened it, it automatically started
changing the coloring of the screen, and i tried quitting
the app but it said it was in use. Then i realized there was
this wierd icon right next to my Time Machine icon that
looked like a brightness adjuster icon from a T.V. and that
was the app. It doesn't quit when you close it from your
dock, it just hides it.

lol! sorry, did you had a look if the installation has put
it into the startup items list? (systempref-->account)
delete it if so. you might want to use appzapper to unistall
it, sorry about that, did you read the faq
