K...so tonight i was waiting for a bus, and this strange-looking guy comes up to me smiling and he tells me this story about needing gas money. i told him i really didnt have much cash on me, and he wouldnt leave me alone. i got kind of creeped out, being alone in a poorly-lit parking lot. I wasn't too crazy about the idea of pulling out my wallet in front of the guy. Eventually he went away, luckily.
My question is, what's your opinion on giving money to panhandlers or people on the street? sometimes i'll give a dollar or somethin' to some guy who looks to be on the verge of death, just so he can get some booze, if it'll make him feel better for a little while at least. I feel sorry for them sitting there in the freezing cold. I hate the aggressive panhandlers though.

well, if you were a person looking to hire someone for a specific job, and this guy came in in raggidy old cloths, and smelled like crap, would you give him the job? I think not...

The younge ones can. Not so much the old guys. They've been on the street for so long and becuase they're old there really isn't a job they can get into. And I guess they've not received much education so... I don't know. Give them the gift of music.

To ignore them, the key is 'eye contact' - don't even look at them! Spot them before they spot you....
The's a few in Cardiff city near where I live, and you see them just sat there with boxes and a pack of dogs. Surely, you'd think they'd get rid of the dogs...they can't feed the dogs as well!

"This is the 21st century for god-sakes get your lazy ass up and get a job!" ...c'mon, do you honestly think they WANT to live in cardboard boxes, begging people for money etc? i'm telling you, none of them wanted their life to turn out like that...

What can the individual do though? I fear that if I were to give them cash, they'd only spend it on alcohol! And I do think a lot of people here might agree...
I'm not totally heartless towards the situation....its just that 'I' don't know what we could do!

A lot of homeless peole are mentaly ill (about 75%). Is that really a reason for them to have to live and die on a sidewalk? They deserve the same treatment as anyone else with a disease. Does anybody relly think someone woke up and said to themselves "Ya know...I think I'm gona start acting crazy so that I can be fired from my job. That way I can live on the streets begging for money. Yeah that's the life for me"
