K...so tonight i was waiting for a bus, and this
strange-looking guy comes up to me smiling and he tells me
this story about needing gas money. i told him i really
didnt have much cash on me, and he wouldnt leave me alone.
i got kind of creeped out, being alone in a poorly-lit
parking lot. I wasn't too crazy about the idea of pulling
out my wallet in front of the guy. Eventually he went away,
luckily.

My question is, what's your opinion on giving money to
panhandlers or people on the street? sometimes i'll give a
dollar or somethin' to some guy who looks to be on the verge
of death, just so he can get some booze, if it'll make him
feel better for a little while at least. I feel sorry for
them sitting there in the freezing cold. I hate the
aggressive panhandlers though.

well, if you were a person looking to hire someone for a
specific job, and this guy came in in raggidy old cloths,
and smelled like crap, would you give him the job? I think
not...

The younge ones can. Not so much the old guys. They've
been on the street for so long and becuase they're old there
really isn't a job they can get into. And I guess they've
not received much education so... I don't know. Give them
the gift of music.

more.

think there's like 2 in the whole city, though... I don't
see many of them.

To ignore them, the key is 'eye contact' - don't even look
at them! Spot them before they spot you....

The's a few in Cardiff city near where I live, and you see
them just sat there with boxes and a pack of dogs. Surely,
you'd think they'd get rid of the dogs...they can't feed the
dogs as well!

offline Gonzola from Stockholm (Sweden) on 2002-03-24 10:43 [#00138960]
Points: 917 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

the dogs are given to them...a way for them to get back into
society.

"This is the 21st century for
god-sakes get your lazy ass up and get a job!"
...c'mon, do you honestly think they WANT to live in
cardboard boxes, begging people for money etc? i'm telling
you, none of them wanted their life to turn out like that...

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-03-24 11:04 [#00138964]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker | Followup to Gonzola: #00138960

How is society going to sort the problem out though? - most
of the kinda people I see like that are usually drunks!

offline Gonzola from Stockholm (Sweden) on 2002-03-24 11:12 [#00138970]
Points: 917 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

yes, a lot of them are. shouldn't we help them although they
are alcoholix?

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-03-24 11:14 [#00138971]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

What can the individual do though?
I fear that if I were to give them cash, they'd only spend
it on alcohol! And I do think a lot of people here might
agree...

I'm not totally heartless towards the situation....its just
that 'I' don't know what we could do!

offline Gonzola from Stockholm (Sweden) on 2002-03-24 11:38 [#00138978]
Points: 917 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

i totally agree...it's not much we can do as individuals.
what i meant by "we" helping them, was the social services
helping them:)

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-03-24 11:39 [#00138979]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

I don't think social services give a damn about them though
- I think they're thought of in the same light as criminals!

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-03-24 11:40 [#00138980]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

nicely, was cigarettes

I stopped doing that as well, cause the way Swansea's going
I'll be supporting the whole fucking place in five years

A lot of homeless peole are mentaly ill (about 75%). Is
that really a reason for them to have to live and die on a
sidewalk? They deserve the same treatment as anyone else
with a disease. Does anybody relly think someone woke up
and said to themselves "Ya know...I think I'm gona start
acting crazy so that I can be fired from my job. That way I
can live on the streets begging for money. Yeah that's the
life for me"

they look close to death.

much money?

I think society is most definately, down from the top to the
bottom! Its the people at the top in government that decide
on expediture/taxes and so forth...

offline TrevorGod from Toronto (Canada) on 2002-03-24 14:30 [#00139102]

It's the people on the bottom who decide who goes to the
top.

I'd say its more corporations who pull the strings with
'donations'.

I don't blame or begrudge anyone for becoming successful in
what they do, but you see so much waste being spent on the
wrong kinds of things by governments...

statistics say 20-25% of the population runs the risk of
becoming homeless, one way or another.

i always used to give them some money, especially when they
tell me the stories of their lives when i was waiting for
the bus.
