New cartridge or stylus?

First of all, I really wanted to revive this
thread because it was so nice and cosy, but the question
would be lost.

Basically, my stylus is getting old and worn, so I need a
new one.. or, alternatively, I could get a new cartridge
altogether, but the question is what would be better.

I have an Ortofon Concorde Scratch, and I got it because I
was thinking I should probably try to protect the vinyl when
scratching. The thing is that there hasn't been all that
much scratching. Sure, I'm scratching for fun from time to
time, and I want to keep that option open, so I can't get a
more "pure" hifi cartridge, but maybe the concorde pro or
the qbert or something would be better? If I am to get a new
cartridge instead of just a new stylus, I'm looking for
something that will have better sound quality than the
scratch while retaining the possibility of flawless
scratching abilities, possibly by just changing the weight
setting or something.

Does anyone have any info? Alternatively, w M w can make a
track.

seconded. if you want to keep scratching i don't think
there's much better you can do than the concorde scratch or
maybe an m44-7. i've got one of each and the shure is
louder, bassier, but the mids and highs are better on the
ortofon... seeing as you already have a concorde just get a
new stylus for it

I've got m44g, I like them. Nice bass, loud like the m447
and works easily with under 1g pressure! I scratch with it
set to 2.5g and the thing is great. If you want better hifi,
don't get it, get concordes instead.

There's not really such a thing as a bad cart out of the
ones mentioned.
I would say m44g is the best because the tracking weight is
ridiculously low, can track very well for scratching, has
nice bass and not as lossy at the top end as the m447 and
doesn't look half as phallic or pathetic as the concordes.
But I guess you have to work it out for yourself.

I used a crappy pair of stanton 500s for years. It's all
about enjoying the music at the end of the day. Don't get
too anal about it.

the m44g sits in the groove that little bit more, making it
the best for scratching.
however a cactus needle inserted within the japs eye works a
treat.

The ideal setup would be a needle with a flat frequency
response, but good scratching abilites. Hifi setups are
supposed to colour the sound, but when you have a mixer in
between it's better to leave the colouring up to the user.
I'd expect the dj range to have a flat frequency response,
but the qbert seems to have a cut-off high range...

I've been wanting to get a real hifi vinyl player for a
while now, so I could use that for pure playback and the
1210 for music making, but at the same time I recognise the
fun in having just two 1210s to play with.

I wish I could afford a clearaudio or something.

I want a japs eye.

Can I hold you tonight?

Everyone seems to think the m447 is the better of the two
for scratching, but then recommends running it at 3.5g
minimum.
I can get away with pretty wild scratches at 2.5g maximum
thankyou very much.

Ultimately who cares about frequency response? Use the EQ on
your mixer if it's THAT bad! If the music sounds good then
it's all good. I would avoid audiophile type attitudes. The
life of an audiophile is one of diminishing returns.
Just stick with professional grade/decent consumer grade
stuff and spend the saved money on extra records or cactus
needles maybe. Whatever floats your boat.

Frequency response should actually be as wide and flat as
possible from the source, and then you should modify it as
you go on if you want to.

"I would avoid audiophile type attitudes. The life of an
audiophile is one of diminishing returns."

Not really. It's great when you hear really well reproduced
music, but the satisfaction isn't really smaller when you
hear it on sub-optimal systems: You still enjoy the music
just as much while you recognise the added value of better
sound.

You're smart to be flexible in your appreciation. Some
audiophiles set a high standard of quality that results in
an intolerance for sub-optimal reproduction. Anything less
ends up sounding "bad" or unsatisfying. Not uncommon,
especially in the high end turntable/cartridge market.

I recently bought a AT440MLa cartridge, and it seems to
produce a wide, flat frequency response, or "uncolored," as
they say. Not for scratching, though...

I liked the recently posted autechre interview in which one
of them (can't recall which) described the experience of
growing to love a degraded cassette copy of music and then
hearing the mystique of the music evaporate when a pristine
original is heard years after the fact; the absence of the
distortions and artifacts of the loved cassette makes the
original sound lifeless in comparison.

OMFG didn't I promise to do that like 6 months ago. I've
failed you sir!

I will TRY to get it done this weekend, but I'm pretty busy
with life, the universe and everything!

P.S. That Autechre quote is bang on.

As usual, dave_g is talking sense. The m44g is a really nice
sounding scratch cartridge that would do both well.
Alternately, if you have a spare headshell (I use a cheapo
one for scratching- doesn't noticeably effect the sound
quality or tracking), m447s are dirt cheap these days, get
one of those to scratch (they will last forever, especially
as you don't scratch much) and something a bit more
expensive for hi-fi listening.

Again, like dave I've also had a pair of stanton 500s (and
505s, which are much the same, but a little bit better) that
have had heavy use over the years and are still not too bad.
They sound nicer than m447s to my ears and you can scratch
with them (although obviously they don't track anywhere near
as well as a dedicated scratch cartridge).

Nah, the frequency response is pretty poor and the tracking
is all over the place. Saying that, m44g carts taste like
shit.
