I enjoy:
- John Coltrane - Afro Blue Impression, Blue Train
- Miles Davis - Milestones, Seven Steps to Heaven
- Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
and I need more of this. Please recommend your favourites.

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2008-01-25 13:30 [#02167522]

wayne shorter "adam's apple"
cohort of miles, this is mostly mid 60's grooving and
swinging and fun

pharoah sanders "thembi"
cohort of coltrane, this is an early 70's mix of african
influences, some explosive free jazz and incredibly sweet
melodies, highly recommended

hank mobley "soul station"
sort of late fifties warm, feel-good slightly laid back
party music

lonnie liston smith & the cosmic echoes
"expansions"
pharoah sanders cohort, an early 70's intersection of funky
jazz and psychedelic easy listening, it's not all great but
there are at least two absolutely essential tracks on it

OMG! My fave topic ever... but where to begin?!?!

Ike Quebec - "Heavy Soul" (My fave album at the moment)

Andrew Hill - "Passing Ships" is awesome, but really all his
albums are. "Point of departure" is my favorite album of ALL
TIME!

Jimmy Smith - "House Party", "The Sermon" and "Cool Blues".

Grant Green - "Idle Moments" - "Grantstand" and "Live at the
lighthouse"

Hell, just check out my jazz mixes and study the quite
detailed tracklist:

Download them for free here!.

Eric Dolphy's Iron Man is just as good as Out To Lunch, to
me, that is. I think they were recorded in the same day,
wow. +Ornette Coleman Science Fiction+ If you like early
Coltrane, you also need Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins to
complete big sax name collection.

I second pulseclock's suggestion! PBS is fantastic and it
has both Dolphy and Booker Little in the lineup.

No one has mentioned Jackie McLean! He had a line of
brilliant 'avant-lite' albums on blue note from the late
50's to the late 60's.

"A fickle sonance"
"Let freedom ring"
"This way out"
"One step beyond"
"Action"
"Right now
and on and on and on...

plaidzebra mentioned Hank Mobley's "Soul Station". Be sure
to check out "No room for squares". Whereas "Soul Station"
never really did it for me "No room for squares" swings
badass bad. Andrew Hill and Herbie Hancock share piano duty
on this groover and so does Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd on
the trumpet.

Newer stuff:
Branford Marsalis - Contemporary Jazz

Even Newer:
Ellery Eskelin - Kulak 29 & 30

Just about anything done with Tim Berne's, Craig Taborn's
and Tom Rainey's participation. This new album for ECM -
"Prezens" is much much calmer than their live shows though.
I've been to their concert one week abo and it was really
the best thing ever - aggresive, logical, fuild and totally
ultimately macho.

Her.

slottsfjellfestivalen i juli...i tønsberg...
