why bother? aside from the size of the machine...there's
no optical drive...one or two ports...and for 200 bucks more
you could get a macbook pro which has a lot more power than
this thing. blah

Yeah, I dont get it at all. Seriously, wtf? It might be a
good computer for a kid, but it seriously serves no purpose
aside from necessitating another computer to update this
thing (or spending $99 to get a usb external disc drive).

RETARDED.

Maybe they're trying to compete with OLPC.

MacBook Air Price: $1799

i'd rather spend a few more bucks and get a Pro model with
everything i need...

The new airport extreme's look good though, i might look
into one of them...but i can't believe they thought macbook
air was a great idea

i think it will sell very well. but, it's a niche thing...
'ultra-portable' has become a pretty big market. that's
what they're appealing to.

it's for meetings and travel, not really a main work
machine.

offline gl0tch from www.gl0tch.com     on 2008-01-15 11:54 [#02163840]

Seriously this machine is basically bricked unless you spend
ass loads to get this thing to work properly:

Time Capsule, External SuperDrive, other Computers, iTunes
rentals.

its bullshit.

I hear ya on ultra portable, but laptops are reasonably thin
as is. It's still the same size, just a different
thickness. Still requires that same type of laptop bag that
holds other machines that have 3+ times the shit and weighs
less than 3lbs more.

offline epohs from )C: on 2008-01-15 12:00 [#02163848]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

yeah, but with this market all the peripherals aren't as
important because a business dude or travel guy doesn't want
to carry all of that stuff. plus, bluetooth makes usb a
little less necessary.

unless you have a piece of shit dell laptop thats friggin
huge and clunky pretty much all newer laptops are
portable...you're right on glotch

...but if you're travelling around too an optical drive is
nice to have. what if you have to burn a cd or something
for someone...i'm looking at this thing from an audio/video
standpoint. it might be good for billy and sue in
elementary school, but for that amount of money it should
come with a free iPod and regular macbook...

"Hey, can you burn me a copy of that powerpoint
presentation? Lovely superduper thin laptop btw!

have to reimage them from a usb drive or remotely?

fun…

It’s like owning a vacation home, but you still need a car
to get there. Then you realize your car has a stereo, seats,
heat, and A/C, but the vacation home is underfurnished and
without any amenities.

What’s the point if the shit you need to have to get this
running properly is better than the thing itself?

Redundant marketing ftw!

those bastards - now theyre selling white macbooks with
black keyboards.

i wanted that, but i have to wait until my warranty goes out
to do it.

also, those of you bitching about a laptop not having
optical (and that seems to be the only apparent gripe so
far, and the price) well, remember not everyone uses
computers for the same things you do.

laptops are now becoming peripherals themselves and some
people want something you can whip out in about 5 seconds.

personal computer usage, so.....

So those who consider them as "peripherals" are not in the
majority. Most people are using them as cental work
stations and require them to perform as portable desktops,
not portable portables.

people that need a laptop for presentations and office
thingies will choose that above the macbook pro because of
it's size for sure. the 80 hard drive is also pointed to a
user who has a few programs only.

for th eprofessional user no way - i mean i would have to
use a usb hub right after taking this thing out of the
box...

also - i would be a bit afraid about durability - my hp
laptop is pure plastic, it's ugly as fuck but i had it at
about 20 gigs and no crash ever on stage. this macbook looks
too delicate.

although it might be cool with a docking station actually in
which you would have multiple usb and firewire ports.

beautiful piece of engineering.

it is awesome, but about $500 too expensive. i'm sure
there'll be a price drop.

the one thing that surprised me is that i would've expected
the battery life to be better since there's no moving parts
at all.

i could do with a smaller machine while carrying my main
system around, simply because it's not too easy to whip out
a 17" beast on the train or something.

but for the price of this thing, i'd much rather just get a
second hand 12" PowerBook G4. considering that this MacBook
Air isn't gonna be useful for much else other than web
browsing and the occasional code crunch while on the move,
the G4 would be more than adequate for that task.

in fact, i think when i can afford it, i'll do just that.

i constantly use the DVD drive to back up files rip cds etc.
i guess if all you do i surf the web or just need a machine
to do specific tasks this is okay, but there's a macbook
which costs less and offers more...same battery life, same
screen size, more memory if you need it, ports etc etc.

its really nice and fits a niche market but its just too
expensive, it should be priced not much more than a macbook
not almost as much as a macbook pro!

they've died on me in the past so i make a spare copy for

businesses travelers (meetings), rich college kids (carry
between classes), urban commuters ..

for instance, my mom is a consultant driving around all over
the state, i'm not even sure she has a peripheral other than
a printer that she connects to via a network at home, and a
usb key to backup forms. her entire job is traveling to
meetings. this is aimed at someone like her.

i'm thinking that they are aiming at people who realize that
this is not a primary workstation. if they need to burn or
load CDs they'll use their office desktop.. i believe it has
the ability to access another machine's CD drive wirelessly.
they may be a little ahead of the curve, but i also think
that's cool. bring on the day where i can ditch CDs all
together.

this is a machine that is focused on portability, which i
think is pretty cool. larger laptops are beginning to
compete with desktops on features, which is cool in it's own
way but i think it has come at the expense of a focus on
true portability. the air i think will begin to push a
certain segment of the market back in that direction (i know
it's not the first ultra-portable), and i think that's good.

Epohs, i can understand that the person on the go would like
this...my argument is why not create a different device...an
iphone or ipod touch type device on steroids perhaps.

macbook air = 3 lbs
macbook air optional optical drive= 1lb

that puts you at 4lbs. if you decide to purchase that
drive.

MB air=$1,800
MBA optical drive= $100
ethernet adaptor $30

grand total $1,930
unless you go with the flash/hard drive i'd be $3,130
---------------------
mackbook= roughly 1000 bucks...with the optical drive and
everything you need. But oh...it weighs five pounds.

If the weight was the issue of portability you need to hit
the gym. really 3 or 4lbs vs 5lbs...please.

the remote optical disc set up thing is a good idea. But it
needs a little more work and most users will probably never
get past the set up stage with it. Basically you have to
have an install disc with you to set up the machine you'll
be mooching off of. this means you'll have to carry that
disc everywhere with you and you're pretty much F'd in the A
if you leave it home or lose it.

the way things are going we won't need these types of
technology to function in the future. People will look back
on optical discs the same way most of the people of our
generation look at records/tape formats for music etc.
We're not at that point yet...if you could walk anywhere and
be able to access the internet or back up files wirelessly
it'd be great, but again thats not always the case...and
still far off from happening on a massive level. if you've
got the equipment at home your good but if you're "on the
go" you're pretty much fucked.

In other news Apple stock took a hit (wonder why)

offline epohs from )C: on 2008-01-16 08:21 [#02164144]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

yeah, it's too expensive for sure. it's on par with other
ultra-portables, but that's not saying much because they're
all too expensive.

i would guess there will be a price drop around may, and in
the rev 2 they'll use the new Intel Penryn which will help
battery life, and eventually after they've driven investment
in solid state HDs they'll be the standard and the prices
will go down a little because of that... maybe.

offline epohs from )C: on 2008-01-16 08:22 [#02164147]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

Apple's stock went down partially because the entire market
went down, but also because people were predicting this
macworld to be so awesome that our minds were going to be
blown out of our butts, and it ended up somewhat boring.

offline thecrimsonguard from ∞ (United States) on 2008-01-16 08:41 [#02164153]
Points: 1801 Status: Lurker

yea, unless you have an iphone/ipod touch that stuff wasn't
that big of a deal...actually i was hoping they'd announce
3rd party apps but that probably won't happen until Iphone
2 comes out...or ever happen.

the new airport extreme devices are a cool idea, but you're
fuct when and if the drive fails. its not the issue of
ripping the unit open and throwing a new drive in...its
getting the new drive recognized again.

the only thing appealing about the apple tv 2 is the price
cut. currently i don't have an HDTV (don't really plan on
buying one) and i want a device that can do every
format...not just what apple wants you to use.

hopefully next year they'll have some new interesting toys.
