just wondering if anyone knew what the first music
sequencing programs were that you could import and cut up
audio? i'm doing an essay on compostional techniques of
IDM/drill & bass and would like to know.

Not that I've used either, but probably a Fairlight or
Synclavier.
These weren't standalone software, but hardware synths. The
Fairlight used a business computer as the brains. I'm sure
you can google as well as I can to find out more.

Before that there were programs for minicomputers like the
pdp-11 used in academia, but I don't know what they could do
cut up wise. I imagine they were not used for drill n bass
at all! Probably more like csound type stuff.

Food for thought anyway.
