What is meant by 'authenticity' in popular music? Is a cover version of a song necessarily less 'authentic' than, and therefore inferior to, the original?
Illustrate your answer with detailed reference to at least FOUR recorded tracks, and with critical reference to at least two authors on the subject.
2500 words.

Authentic music is music you make with yourself as the starting point, as opposed to music you make with some sort of external goal, like making music for a commercial or conforming to what your producer thinks will make a hit.

How about, like, a real autechre track is 'authentic' and a fake 'leaked' autechre track claimed to be real isn't. Being in context of music shouldn't change the definition unless the word evolved into a sort of weasel-word commonly used by someone selling something to make it seem sparkly and wonderful and good. Kind of like 'An all new Friends, next Thursday on NBC'. Oh, all of it is new.. wowsers

I approached it from perceived authenticity. The hardest part about writing these essays is working out what the person who's marking it wants to hear.

hahaha that's funny, strange, and bit hard to believe.
reminds me of middle school. you were either a "wigger" (excuse my language) or a skater aka rap vs rock.
once high school came around pot tended to join everyone together and musical tastes broadened.
i went to school with a lot of white kids (myself included)

A personal essay on 'Authenticity in Popular Music'
To me, authenticity in popular music is closely related to my own subjective feeling of experiencing 'honesty' in a song.
Frank Zappa once said: 'Writing about music is like dancing
to architechture.' What I think he meant about this statement, is that music is an abstract art form and that an
individual's personal feelings of listening to a certain piece of music can not be be translated into the written word. First of all, this is because a person can not convey
his or hers subjective feelings (like joy, grief, euphoria or melancholy) to others about - for example - a song, in an
objective way. Second of all, it is because these feelings I've mentioned - and other human feelings - in themselves are not objective, and it is therfor impossible to share them to anyone but yourself without them losing some of their 'subjective reality' which they are part of.
This brings me over to Nietzsche. He once said sometihing like: 'In music, the passions enjoy themselves.' Music is about, like all art, enjoying yourself (and your passions).
However, it is deeply personal Which passions you want to enjoy. Some people like to listen to music which in the general public is percieved as, for example, 'depressing.' The point is that individuals themselves choose which music
suits their personality.
However, I am of the opinion that the feeling of honesty is
of a more universal and objective nature than a lot of other
human feelings. This is not restricted to art, and certainly
not to 'popular music.' But in terms of 'popular music', who
could not be affected (in some way or another) by the honesty of Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing Compares To You', Joy
Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' or Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone'?
Historically speaking, a lot of artists are remembered for their honesty. This includes writers, painters and musicians.
