I need new screens; the ones I have now gave me serious eye
fatigue when I was writing my paper last semester.

I won't be doing any serious gaming or whatever, and I'm
planning on getting two eventually, as I have two now, and I
just hate working on single-monitor computers. There's just
never enough space. I'm also thinking maybe 22" is the way
to go, much for the same reason: It's only when you get to
20 or 22" an above that the resolutions start to become
decent.

I'd prefer to get one that can be adjusted up-down, and not
only back-forth or whatever, but it's not really super
necessary.

Not too expensive, but I'd still like some quality.

I've been looking at the ViewSonic VX2235wm and the Samsung
SyncMaster 226CW Deluxe Version. Both are supposedly good,
but the ViewSonic has an integrated webcam, which actually
makes me a bit hesitant (I'm not sure if I'm paying extra
for it or whatever, and I'll just never use it) and the
Samsung doesn't have up-down adjustment.

If anyone knows anything about LCDs or these screens or
anything else, a bit of input would be helpful and much
appreciated.

I recently bought an LG 19" widescreen LCD with 2ms response
time and 3000:1 contrast ratio, and it's not the biggest
screen ever but it's really crisp and and the color is
beautiful on it. I'm really happy with it. As you can see I
can't help you with screens above 19", but I do recommend
getting the highest contrast ratio you can afford. Don't
worry about response time unless you play games (which you
said you don't).

HP w2207 22 inch LCD Monitor

Yeah, I've been looking at an LG as well, but the reviews
I've read says it doesn't differ too much from the Samsung.

Yeah, I know about contrast, but most displays (probably
including yours) have the same ratio of about 700-800:1.
That 3000:1 rating is dynamic contrast, which is basically
some sort of "smart" dimming of the backlights and some
other stuff. Most screens use this technology, and when they
advertise their product, some companies prefer writing the
dynamic contrast instead of the static contrast because the
dynamic one looks more impressive. What they forget to
mention is that you need perfect conditions to get that
ratio. Still, it's true that most of these LCDs will have a
better than 700:1 contrast ratio if they use dynamic
contrast.

Looks good, especially that it has vertical adjustment. I'll
take it into consideration.

Does anyone know how relevant that HDCP stuff is? That
screen seems to support it, but some of the others don't.
I'm not really even sure I want to support it,
considering what it entails, but on the other hand, I'm not
very likely to play back any HD-DVDs or Blu Ray discs on my
PC, and I'm pretty sure my video card doesn't support it
anyway...

It seems I've probably misread the numbers on the viewsonic,
and I do indeed mean the ViewSonic VX2255wm, which is
the one with vertical adjustment.

Anyone got anything else to say?

Interesting, I didn't know all that about dynamic contrast.
Makes me wonder if I got swindled a bit.. Not that it really
matters I suppose, I'm still very happy with my new monitor.
Still, if something is advertised as 3000:1, it should
actually be that, not 800:1 with dynamic contrast (or
whatever my monitor actually is).

on a side note, anyone hear about that new Sony (i believe)
that apparently has 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio? Is this
another case of very-high-end dynamic contrast, or a real
contrast ratio?

Maybe they're using LED tech on those screens.

it's possible... I know it's some kind of new technology and
I'm not familiar with LED screens (I know what LEDs are I
just didn't know they were being used in monitors), so it
could be that. I remember at the CES '08 coverage they were
talking about it but I missed the coverage except the last 5
seconds were they reiterated that it was, in fact,
1,000,000:1. It's apparently got some new tech in it that
allows it to be extremely high contrast but it puts almost
no extraneous light into the room. The screen is bright but,
inwardly bright or something. Not quite sure what the deal
with it is. And it's only 11" wide if I remember correctly.

You haven't been swindled: A 3000:1 dynamic contrast is kind
of high, as dynamic contrasts go, at least for pc screens.
There are many screens with lower dynamic contrast (1000:1,
for instance).

1,000,000:1? Not with LCD. It could be OLED or Laser or
something.

Here's a link of some quick info on the that screen.
You guys are correct, it uses OLED technology.

Drunken: yeah, like I said, it I guess it doesn't matter
what my actual contrast ratio is because, even in graphics
intensive games, the monitor still looks better than my old
17" CRT, and considering it runs at a constant 75hz as
opposed to my old CRT's 60hz, it looks smoother too. :)

in this all of a sudden. :D

Well, I'm probably going to go for the ViewSonic VX2255wmb.
The difference in picture quality seems, from reviews, to be
small, if there is a difference at all, and I'd gladly pay a
bit more to have better ergonomic options. After all, the
reason why I decided I need a new screen is that it started
getting to me when I was writing my papers this semester,
and with the possibility of it not only being about eyes,
but also ergonomic stuff, I'd rather go for the safest bet
in that respect.

I guess, if I was more of a gamer, I'd get the other one,
because of the 2ms response time.

God damnit, I just accidently scratched my screen with a
piece of plastic with a jagged edge. I was rearranging
things on my desk and moved something too close to the
screen and put a good 1 inch scratch that is terribly
noticeable. There are some LCD screen cleaners out there,
but I can't tell if these are anything more than just
Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. Wouldn't such a
mixture only be useful on very minor surface scratches? The
scratch I made is deep enough that when I run my finger
across it, I can feel a physical groove carved into the
screen. :( This is really disheartening, since I bought this
monitor only a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any tricks or
suggestions to get a deep scratch to look less noticeable on
an LCD screen?

If I learned anything from my Wacom tablet is that once the
plastic sheet has a dent or a scratch nothing will remove
it, all attempts I made only worsed the scratch.

What you could do is send it back to fix, naturally you'll
have to pay because it wasn't a factory error. Heck if they
changed the glass screen cover on CRT monitors they must
change the plastic sheet on LCD's too I imagine.

Ah, right. I meant to update this for future reference.

The viewsonic's "height adjustment" was useless. I went to a
store to check it out, and the screen is really high off the
base from the start, and you can only make it higher.

I should also mention that BenQ screens often come with VGA
connector only for some weird reason.

I've also seen the HP in real life, and the gloss kind of
put me off. Plus, the colours may look more "vibrant" or
whatever, but they don't look right; you couldn't use
it for photo editing, etc. It also has a lag issue, but
that's just something I read on-line, and there are
conflicting stories of people who love it for gaming. The
major plus is the awesome ergonomic possibilities, so if you
aren't going to be doing stuff that needs accurate colours,
this is a good bet.

But I'm getting the Samsung (either the 226bw or the cw if I
want to be sure I get the right panel, although it costs a
bit more). Sure, the guy at the store tried to tell me it
was "outdated," (it's from 2007 el oh el) but with the tests
I've seen, they still mention it when reviewing newer
screens in the same price-class, and there aren't many
screens that can match it. Plus, my brother just bought one,
and he says it looks good, so I'm probably going for that
one.

I'm thinking abour buying a 26" one now. I'm watching movies
quite a lot and I can't be bothered anymore with the 15"
laptop screen. There's quite a cheap Belinea on the market
(112601 is the model number I believe)> I remember Belinea
screens always getting good reviews, but they were never the
cheapest choice like this time (besides BenQ of course) so
I'm quite worried. It's really hard to find reviews of
screens over 24" on the web. Also, the internet stores give
different information about whether it has HDMI input or
not. Does anyone have any info about this particular market?

If you're going to be watching movies from your computer..
well, first of all, I'd say don't. Just get them in a
decent format and watch them on a TV. If you're still going
to do it, with LCDs, basically, the larger they get, the
more crap the movie looks. I guess it has something to do
with that native resolution thing.

Anyway, check this link.

I've only seen problems with upscaling on display at large
stores. I have access to a 40" LCD TV and I must say that
anything, be it DVD or signal from a computer, looks
beautiful on it. A couple of times I was fooled and thought
that a normal resolution image was HD. I looked closely on
pause and damn! a sharp diagonal line was interpolated (is
it interpolation? I'm not sure) so precisely that in that
instant I lost all prejudice against 1080x. Maybe it just
depends on the algorithms used by the manufacturer. That LCD
was made by Samsung by the way.

Well, I would gladly go to Warsaw if I could compare the
performance of those monitors myself in a hi-end computer
store of some sort. I haven't found any info about such a
place yet though.

Their homepage is clear on it having HDMI with DHCP.
They look fresh, but I don't know.. it has a TN panel, just
like this Samsung, which doesn't really mean it has the best
colours (it's only 6-bit, and emulates 8-bit). The advantage
with the TN panels lies in them probably being cheap, and in
response time which is much higher on other types of panels.

and acronyms that weren't there last time I checked.

Tomorrow, I'm going to Berlin. Some store must be selling
them there. From what I see, the Germans still have the
cheapest electro hardware in the region.

That DHCP stuff actually puts me off a bit, and I kind of

be "supporting" it in a way... however, I also wanted the
