ive got 2 rats (used to be four, two have died, the
remaining ones are about 2.5 years old now). ive just
noticed suddenly one of them, his face is all swollen on one
side and seems to be pussing or bleeding or something from
his eye.

i just, i dont know what to do. im sure he cant be
pain-free, i dont want him to suffer, but im also not about
to kill my pet rat.

what the fuck?!

thread?

him out of the cage and he does not look well. i dont want
to disturb him, as he hasnt liked to be held for the past
few months for some reason.

his eye socket. im fucking nauseas thinking about it.

tragic time in your life.

By seeing, we better understand.

Give rat poison to kill your rats? Sounds obvious solution?
Well it IS!

Perhaps the infection is captivity related?

Let the rat go free.

i guess maybe quarantine him from the other rat in case has
something that could be transmitted?

Points: 8833 Status: Regular | Followup to mimi: #02149990

i would, but i really dont have anything to quarantine him
in. im thinking now hes actually got a popped blood vessel
somewhere, because its deffinately blood and when i just
changed their cage he was just as active as ever.

the current plan is to wait until the morning and then find
a vet who can see him.

Yes, you're right, pictures are essential here.

The rat lies still, flesh soft and mouldy,
an expression of fear smeared across face.

sounds like the eye was scratched and the wound possibly
infected. do you keep your rats' claws trimmed?

anyway, you'll need veterinary care. without treatment,
your rat might pull through but lose sight in the eye. i
don't think you can buy antibiotic eyedrops without a vet
and i don't think you want to use an antibiotic ointment in
the eye.

you might try humane society shelters in your area, they
might be able to provide help for low cost.

yeah, ive got him an appointment with the vet at 3 oclock
today. he's still somewhat active, but i believe your
prognosis to be correct about the eyesight cuz he does seem
to have lost it on that side.

im just hoping antibiotics will help, he's a very old rat
and has already had a brother and a sister die in the last
year. the remaining rat, dweezil, is still as fat and happy
as he ever was.

also, im not gonna be giving them whiskey (altho they do
love, and i mean LOVE alcohol) because im supposed to be
keeping him hydrated, but i have been smoking the poor guy
out. they love the weed too, my rats and i have so much in
common :P

This is an honest question: how intelligent are they, and
how responsive are they to you? I've heard that rats are
intelligent, but don't know how intelligent or how good they
are as pets. Are they dog-like?

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2007-12-03 12:48 [#02150264]

considering the size of their brains, yes they are
intelligent, the smartest of the rodent family i believe. i
havent exactly put that much to a test, altho they are adept
at finding their ways out of boxes and stuff.

dog-like as in coming when you call them and stuff? i
suppose maybe with a lot of conditioning, they do recognize
it when i yell "RATS!" at them, but i doubt you could get a
rat to be as obedient as a dog.

but theyre still great pets, mine have been raised around
humans since they were born and are extremely well
socialized; they love people and will hang out on your lap
or shoulder running around for a while, but they eventually
cant hold it anymore and end up pooping so i put them back
once that starts happening.

Alcohol-loving rats? They sound pretty awesome to me, I hope
your little buddy pulls through! It's too bad rodents' lives
are so short... If I'm going to get attached to an animal
I'd hope it would live at least 10 years. That's why I gave
up owning mice, hamsters, and gerbils circa 6 years ago. It
was too much attachment and loss. Anyway, good luck with the
vet, let us know how it went after.

Cool. It's nice that they're used to humans like that...I
might stop looking at eternally asleep rat pictures and get
a real one. Animals make me happy, and it's only been
tarantulas, praying mantises and giant centipedes so far,
which are quite fun to watch when they kill things, but not
exactly friendly.

The best would be a pet crow. Impossible to get, though. :-(

just got back from the vet. the most likely prognosis at the
moment is that he got some kind of abscess under one of his
molars which is actually pushing his eye out of its socket.
unfortunately he didnt seem healthy enough to be put under
today, so they have sent me some with some antibiotics to
give him and if he is stronger tomorrow they will hopefully
be able to drain it.

he's in surgery right now. they are either going to pop his
eye back in or remove it, depending on whether it ruptures
during the procedure or not. its also possible that he wont
make it out of the surgery.

here's hoping.

socket and sewed it shut. the stitches are to be removed
next week.

Was the surgery costly hedphukkerr? Reminds me of that
episode of Seinfeld where George runs over a squirrel and
doesn't want to pay for surgery .

actually theyre saying it was most likely trauma that caused
it.

the first appointmet cost 150 usd and the surgery cost
another 286 usd, but its worth it.

thanks for all the support you guys, cruiser is glad we was
in your thoughts.

really glad the little guy pulled through! losing a pet
always sucks, thats one of the problem with Rats. I mean
they're loveable but they only live 3 or 4 years max, right?
:(

All things considered though, $286 for a pet surgery is
reasonable.
