I killed my hermit crabs by not giving them water or something, and 2 of my 3 gerbils and a hamster because I was a horrible piece of shit kid. I never intended to hurt them, but was just so fucking careless and thoughtless. If I knew my passed dog was somewhere up there I would like to imagine myself with a pet kiwi. I greatly admire your caring, and awesome thread title! Also, did you see the Disney movie I am thinking of (yes, that one), and what did you think of it. Just because. |

WTF! im guessing noone else clicked this link because there were no comments on it. i dont know what that rat thing was, but watching it being skinned alive was terrible :O and then they pulled this white dog out of a cage and i had to stop watching. that shit was easily 10x worse than 2girls1cup, or any other shock stuff i've seen on the internet : ( |

i didnt see anything bad happen to the dog, but i dont think they were taking it out of the cage to take it for a walk or anything. watching it made me wanna help stop what they were doing, but theres like so many other things id wanna help out with as well.. surely enough, im just gonna sit on my ass and forget about it, and surely enough it's gonna make me feel like a jerk for not doing anything about it. perhaps i'll just find solace in not eating kfc chicken. |

To be honest (not to be insincere), I don't think he was referring to the size of the animal, but rather the cost of a replacement. Pedigree puppies with all the shots and vet certifications can cost thousands of dollars, therefore a 400 dollar surgery bill is cheaper than the cost of an entire new pet. I'm not saying that I wouldn't get attached to a rat, but that, economically, I understand where chuck is coming from. (If that is indeed where he is coming from. If not, sorry for talking out of my arse.) |

well #1 my rats weren't taken from the wild. a friend of a friend had the mother and we were given four of them. also, i think my rats would be much happier running around with their siblings, being warm, being fed, and being safe from predators (of which there are many for rats) than the opposite of these options. wouldn't you? |

Precisely, you have a romantic notion that your warm, cosy rat is a happy rat. This couldn't be further from the truth, these animals live on pure instinct, they're not human. Even if it was happy, it wouldn't know it's happy anyway. If you deny it the space and habitat it should be living in it will get depressed and anxious. Everything it's programmed to do is unable to function properly. If you take chimpanzees for example. Apparently it's very very dangerous transporting them from one country to another. If they are locked in a cage for long periods the depression and anxiety can literally kill them. So how can you expect certain domestic animals to be "happy" when they are locked up practically their whole lives. |

so you're unfamiliar with domestication, eh? that's fine, but don't try to impose your views on others when you seem to know nothing at all about human/animal bonds. you've apparently never known a domesticated rat that enjoyed the company of friendly animals. try it; rats can make good friends. they are not human, neither are they unfeeling machines. regarding the cage, rats are used to small living spaces. a rat can live healthy and happy if the living space is not too small. if there is food, fresh water, space for exercise, cozy bedding, friendly rat cohabitants and opportunities for stimulation they will not want for anything. they will not desire to seek out what they already have! while it's true they are very different from humans, they unquestionably enjoy (in a ratty way) friendly interactions. for the record, i do agree with your sentiments regarding animals that are not domesticated. i don't visit zoos, etc. i don't feel that birds should be caged or their wings clipped. you still need to look at members of a given species as individuals. they are not as complex as humans but their environment and their experiences shape their experience in the now. that was my humble opinion... |
