People say Untilted is 'wankey' and for the clubs etc. Wtf.
I'm listening to it now and I must slap myself for not realizing this earlier but, it has absolutely nothing to do with clubs or dancefloors or wankery at all.
It sounds like the future, like from 2400. The concept is unknown, it is not completely concrete like you hear with funckarma or other IDM type artists.
Other artists that make bleeps and noises usually sound very familiar in the sense that you are drawn into it immediately.
Untilted on the other hand sounds more distant. It's not like you hear it or think it immediately. That does not mean it's alien however, it's rather something unknown.
I hear the sounds on it and it's not apparent to me what the sounds 'are', what they represent and symbolize.
It seems like people heard it and heard fast cuts and beats and immediately thought wankery, and maybe unemotional.
But upon further listening I could say that it's not farther from the truth.
There are a lot of what I would call 'deep' sounds on this album.
Just a single sound maybe, that would make me think of something immediately.
And it's more densely packed than earlier output which results in shit not being so obvious.
I have rarely listened to Untilted, and everytime I did I didn't like it much.
But tonight, in light of the new album info and everything I gave it a spin and sort of "reformed" my thinking, and built associations that at least I feel very strongly in this music.
It's like I'm not even listening to the same album :P

no not wankey in any form. but it's definately an album where the guys went "back to basic".
i think the guys just really wanted to have some fun and certainly had it while making this album (as rob and sean stated in interviews last year).
i mean come on - the "break" sample - seriously. it's superb and implementing it into the livesets was a banger everytime but that was like so totally cheesy :> not that autechre that we remember from always being hardcore serious.
that's actually the fact why aphex alwasy hated them - that they never even in the slightest bit try to make some fun track or just some fun element.
or look at the other tracks - fermium ? the melody is like o so funny and the whole disintegration of it going on reminds me of earlier stuff.
and sublimit - that chord in the middle and that breakbeat ? that's the most dancy track autechre created ever.
and that dub at the end of augmatic disport ? von oswald surely is proud.
so - not wankery at all. top notch, pure class, hot. but it's a really fun album.

yeah but to be honest i hear something more as well..
i mean it wasnt apparent to me right away but lying half asleep barely able to open my eyes, i realized how obscure this album is compared to alot of other stuff.
and i also seem to think it sounds more serious than it might be/they intended.
serious in the sense that there is a whole world in the album that fits in with the futuristic earlier output.
i mean its like people dont even hear it when i read their comments.
i just like to absorb the sounds as individual things in the songs, rather than a whole (although i do that too)
fuck i dunno how to explain it, its as if i was missing something all this time.
its less obvious on this album, not as catchy maybe, less intensity in the way it is presented maybe.
im not denying anything of what you said though, i think youre right, but i still think theres more to it.

don't listen to it often. had some times with it where I loved certain parts. I just find it hard to get into. It's not a sound I want to hear when I browse my albums. It's a pile of whatever compared to most other releases they've done.

where do you people get these aphex quotes? links would be appreciated
and yea, i love untilted, it's neither as serious nor as superficial as people have claimed... i think it's their most LINEAR album since tri repetae... i have this whole theory about the name, too, that it's like un-tilted, i.e. straight, i.e. straight-forward, i.e. linear, like pure hardware sound like someone said

I never understood how they just stood there like robots the whole time. Beats that phat automatically make ones head go back and forth just a little bit. Maybe they didn't want to get a headache from head bobbing on tour. Otherwise, they're robots.

Same here; if I was playing that stuff, I wouldn't be able to resist a bit of movement. I showed a live set to someone not even usually into the more "IDM" side of electronic music and even they started nodding and thought it'd be nice to check them out live. It's THE best dance music, damnit.
It's funny; musicians who suck prance about on stage with their big ugly guitars, and those pumping out lovely speedy CLAP CLAP CLAP grimey super-music sand there looking like they're frozen trying to hide a mega panic attack.

Yes I know that; even more reason to get a bit more into it! If anything, if they were just doing what lots of other "laptop musicians" do - play back files on a traktor-like program - I'd get their lack of enthusiasm. I don't really have a problem with it, and I don't expect leaping about, I just find it a bit surprising given the nature of the music. Just because you're doing a lot live doesn't mean you're unable to pigeon bob a little bit.

I don't know sir, it isn't a conscious decision, but there is a bit of movement and it's bound to look a bit silly. There are another two musicians involved too and we all have to know where we're going as it's semi-improvised, so there has to be some physical...er...messages...being sent about.

It's more cartoony and the sounds alone are more "cheesy" than Autechre have used in prior releases. It's taken me awhile to digest Untilted... I like it a lot, but it's nowhere close to Confield, Gantz Graf, or even Draft.
Personally I hope the next release sounds nothing like Untilted.

untilted is a grower. sublimit is probably what jumped out the most at first, but it's all pretty lovely after you sink into it. seeing them live put their 'ideas' on this album a bit into perspective, hearing them reform LCC inside of their performance was so great! it's a sweeping pulse of an album, really.

problem: laptop shows = boring solution: final cut, a DV camera and a digital projector
Seriously though I saw autechre in 2001 for Confield and that set was awesome as far as the music but looking at their glowing faces and 2 glowing apples on their laptops was boring as hell. It is too loud to just hang out, talk w your friends and listen and awkward to look anywhere else other than the stage. Some wise ass made the comment (about people watching the stage) "what are these people looking at" but what the hell are you supposed to look at, your shoes?
Maybe I should have got some glow sticks and danced the robot.
Matmos, Mouse on Mars and others seem to have no problem making it interesting for people to watch because they realize they are putting on a live show, not a DJ set.

Yea I guess but if it is standing room only and you don't dance it kind of sucks to just stand there with nothing to look at. When I listen to music I can be doing other things like driving, cleaning up, watching TV on mute or something. I don't stand there and stare at my stereo for 45 to an hour.
Some electronic shows are ok without a backing visual if the people are moving around, going back and forth to different pieces of gear etc. Even Otto (for as much of an idiot as he is) was able to entertain me with only a laptop and mic by rubbing his nipples, making stupid faces and pissing off the rest of the crowd.
All that said I went to a noise festival recently where Christoph Heemann was playing along with the guy from Beequeen and some other people. They didn't have any backing visuals or anything but the venue was such that I could sit down, close my eyes and meditate on the music. I enjoyed that alright.

Once, years ago, I went in some cafe in Soho, I think it was, and I was having whatever for lunch, probably a pint, and I was thinking "the music's pretty good, sounds.. familiar". I went for a slash downstairs, and there was Spring Heel Jack fucking about playing their tracks.
That's my idea of a gig, specially these days as I get tired very quickly.

lol just reading through this again. Why doesn't everyone like it? Sure, it's not as complex and as mind bending as Draft, but to be honest that's what I like about it.
LCC punches you in the face on every single drum hit. It's brilliant. It's one of the few IDM albums where every little bit HITS you, you can feel every tiny little thing. With something so complex like Draft, some of it just sounds messy and doesn't have such a strong impact.
It's great to dance to as said earlier. Somehow with the simplicity of it, they manage to keep atmosphere. Just check Pro Radii.
Funny how I loved the sound of this album before I found Elektron instruments (well I knew about them, but hadn't really heard them). I love the sound of the Elektron gear, it just has a certain sound.
